Hi Simon, although I wouldn't remember this specific no.plate I served as a Vehicle Specialist in the RAOC and during that time I was at the vehicle depot in Ludgershall from 1976-1979.I notice your vehicle was there on two occasions during that time.If you wish I could tell you the procedures carried out by us charting the vehicles general history from Reciept of a Vehicle to the Issuing of it to another unit.I worked in the vehicle storage section and we had 10 teams of two guys whose job it was to take all servicable vehicles (which this would have been) and give them basically a first parade check then take them out on the road around Tidworth Garrison to check all was well with the vehicle. At some point one of my mates would have driven it or even though a remote chance may have driven it myself. As I said if you wish I would be glad to tell you the history of a vehicle during its time in a vehicle depot.Kind regards,Tony.

Another question, does anyone know how many ferrets served in cyprus?

There was a Sqn based at Nicosia, The Force Reserve Sqn, so called as the word reconnaissance could not be used as the Turks don't like the word recce. something to do with the connotations with spying. As far as remember there was five tps of 4 mk 2s and a mk 1 for the SSM

There was also a mixed Sqn at Episkopi, of Ferrets, Saladins and some Saracens. numbers I can't remember

I at times in my military career served in both units.

Bazz's memory has had a senior moment. We had six troops of four times Mark 2 plus the Mark 1 for 29C. We had six troops per squadron in NI (74-76) and retained five sabre troops plus a GW Ferret troop in tidworth so that we didn't have to heave the orbat up between the three tours.

This particular car never crossed my path, but Bazz and I were in Aliwal Bks, Tidworth in 1976-7 (with an UNFICYP tour in the middle) while our colleagues 3RTR were next door but one in Bhurtpore.

Hi I was in Cyprus with A Sqn 17th/21st Lancers during 1970 and 1971. I will dig out my old photo's and have a look for you. The vehicle wasn't UN at that time but with the Sovereign Base AreaSquadron bassed at Pergamos camp.

Didn't find any of your vehicle but here is one of the same period. This is what yours would have looked like in the early seventies.

The bloke holding onto it is a rather young looking me!

Have you had a look at the fv-701 daimler ferret scout car site?

Alien, I do apologise for my senior moment, I was nearly right.

Dear Challenger,

On behalf of the rivet counting Ferret owners brigade, may I please ask some questions about that photo?

1 interesting to see the older front side lights still on the Ferret, any idea when that change over was effected to the more modern light towers?

2 Is the 17/21st Lancers sticker on a blue background and we just cant see it?

3 There Ferret to the left is missing it's side bins fore and aft of the spare tyre, anomally or standard practice for SBA vehicles?

The older side lights was unusual at that time, most of the other vehicles had indicator and side one on top of the other.

The 17/21 L sticker was on a square blue background. We put them on everything.

As far as I can remember the missing bins is an anomally but I will dig a little more.

Found another photo. Both types of side lights and bins in place.

Hello

I was based at Pergamos Camp during 1970-71 with A Sqn of the 17/21 Lancers, even after all the photos I took I only have a couple of Ferrets, both of whose Identifications are too fuzzy or partially blocked. The Saladin was my mode of transport in Cyprus and I only drove a couple of Ferrets in N.I.

Anyway here they are:

I think the id for the Ferret on the right is 05??53, the other two, no chance!!
