1 ton L/R 109?

Mk3iain

Question

I have memories of 1 ton 109 g/s landrovers on my RAF Squadron in the late 70s, we knew them as 1 tonners and they looked like a normal 109 but had 6 cylinder engines and heavier duty suspension. I have not heard any mention of the type since, what were they for? (and did they really exist??) :red:

Thanks in advance!!

Iain

yes they did exist, civillian and m.o.d.

as you recall correct, they were fitted with 6 cylinder engines, heavy duty suspension, the wheels were wider, (the offset i think) and usually fitted with 9.00 x 16 tyres. they could carry a heavier load.

i personnaly think they are the best looking of the series landies, they had a big butch look to them, i will look for some photo's for you. :-D

cheers

Hi, they also had a lower ratio transfer box to cope with the larger wheels/payload, which made them painfully noisy to drive :D

The series 3 1-tonnes also generally had the dana/salisbury front and rear axles for extra strength. I think the 2a's had ENV rears fitted.

I love the silky smooth 6-cyl, well, when its properly maintained :cheesy:

That was the failure of many of these engines - treating them like the other landie lumps and not the car-derived genteel engine it is!! I ran a beautifully maintained 6 for a long time - a joy!

===============

Can't think of any MOD 1 ton "Bonnet Control" Utility , the nearest would be the TACR-1

However - ISTR they always had a 2286cc 4 banger..

The 1 ton chassis (civilian) was based on the military 109" chassis.. IIRC the S2A MOD version (Rover 11) , rear civilian style rear tow-member as no rear bumperettes ,and not LHD or RHD handed because it had two steering relay holes.

I think there are also 4 pot 1 tonners as I have been told that is what mine is by a local landy specialist,I have 7.50 16s fitted but on the wider rims and it certainly sits higher than standard just a little higher than my brother in laws defender with a 2 inch lift kit
