skapunkninja Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 So, the restoration project has thrown up another spanner in the works:undecided: intermittantly, it gets stuck in 2nd gear and i cant move the gearstick back to neutral. Eventually, with alot if wiggling, it will come back out and drive fine until it sticks again. im going to pop the gearbox out next weekend and strip it down. I've heard this is a fairly common problem with MB's, so anyone got any tips/advice? cheers, Rich Quote
Tony B Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Before taking out, try putting in, Slick 50 gear box treatment. Works an absolute treat in Landy's and the Dodge. Only needs to go in once as well. Quote
Clifford Posted March 13, 2011 Posted March 13, 2011 Before you take it out, check the gearbox lid and the stick. Be shaw that the pin on the bottom of the stick is not warn out and the slot that it fits in is OK.Its a known problem......Cliff Quote
skapunkninja Posted March 13, 2011 Author Posted March 13, 2011 Thanks Cliff. Just whipped the stick out, and the bottom is completely worn out! I've heard good things about Slick 50. i'll chuck some in as well and see how it goes Quote
deadline Posted March 14, 2011 Posted March 14, 2011 Wear on the shifter is a common problem. I just ran a bead of weld on it and contoured it with the grinder. Typically the worn shaft will cause problems with two gears... depending on which end of the shifter is worn... Rev and 2nd, 1 and 3rd as the tip would wear down. There could be other issues that might be looked at if repairing/replacing the shifter does not correct it: Interlock pin (dirt, wear) Detent ball/sprint (dirt/wear) Shifter plate (wear) Shifter rail (bent, burr) Most T84 issues are about not being able to shift INTO a gear (worn synchros) Quote
