Very common & noticeable phenomenum.

I guess it's this website you've found http://www.maritimequest.com/warship_directory/us_navy_pages/uss_iowa_bb61.htm

Since it's lobbing 16", 1,900lb shells, 20-odd miles, it needs a hell of a lot of energy to do so.

Here's the Tirpitz (A mere 15" calibre)

Lots of photos of these leviathans on this thread. http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/showthread.php?157795-Battleship-Thread

Watched the Tony Robinson documentary "Blitz street" earlier this year where they filmed a succession of explosions on a row of terraced houses. The shock waves were often quite visible on there, explained as the air being torn apart by the force of the blast.
