Many many years ago I read a book (title long deleted from memory - sorry) about a tank crew who were unmounted in Normandy and issued with a brand spanking new Sherman. Spent their next days chipping all the the nice cleean bright white paint off the inside so that if they were hit, the paint wouldn't flake off and behave like the effects of a HESH round.
