biscuits_brown Posted July 18, 2006 Share Posted July 18, 2006 Well, it's military, it's a vehicle of sorts and after today it's all too historic, unfortunately. The Canberra was designed in 1944 and was the RAFs first operational jet powered bomber. The capacious fuselage lent itself to conversion and Canberras served throughout the Cold War in a variety of interesting and often dangerous roles. The last three remaining aircraft, designated PR9 and equipped for photo recce. Were officially retired today. As part of 39Sqn's standown all three aircraft took part in a UK tour, visiting those locations which were significant in the aircraft's history. As Short Brothers of Belfast built, modified and maintain Canberras, their factory at Belfast's George Best City Airport merited a visit from one of the tourers. I flew in a TT17 variant as a cadet and remember skiving off school to see Canberras arrive at Shorts for maintainance (someone on the staff would always "leak") I'll miss 'em.
