chassis and rear axle now sand blasted and in the workshop, some small areas of deep pitting will be filled with weld and then ground flat, engine has gone to gardner enthusiast to be repaired. big end bearings were breaking up and blocks needed new liners, pistons are re usable and will have new rings fitted, gearbox only needed cleaning and will be painted before fitting in chassis which will get primer and one coat of colour before engine gearbox and back axle are fitted. will get final coats of colour then. still a long way to go but at least now its going back together. anybody on here now about the rear axle hub seals as it needs two replaceing that are leaking

handbrake shoe was badly worn, somebody has been useing the scammell with it seized on until its worn it away, i have had a new one cast useing the good one as a template and both have now been relined ready for fitting. tried to get a second hand one but nothing was available, casting cost about £75.00 including the milling and drilling required plus the lining which is not too bad for a part i couldn't get

Good work john. I dearly miss having a telehandler. Unfortunatly i can't put any pictures of the vehicle on the internet where it is stored at the moment, but i will keep you posted with pics of bits i take home to sort out. Just pulling the rad apart at the moment, and hope to get the gearbox home soon. Have put the last coats of paint on the chassis, so all the brake linkage that has been sorted can go back in. We got the second gear case off the axle at the weekend, unfortunatly the bronze bush stayed behind on the diff bit, so got to get that off now. Progress is slow because i live in Bristol during the week, so only have weekends on her. Ha - that would sound better in a different context wouldn't it? Anyway we plug on. Richard

hi richard, will get some pics on soon to show how far ive got, as for the engine the saga started 2 years ago, ive no experiance of rebuilding engines so found an old chap to strip the gardner for me and when in bits found that the bearings in the big ends were starting to break up, it was like peices of a jigsaw coming away, the crank was allready ground to maximum so after speaking to various peaple i sent it to gardner enthusiast for another crank and bearings to be fitted, new liners in the blocks and new valves and seats then re asemble the engine for me, after 18 months and still not finished i went to pick up all the bits to find they had been stored in a shipping container and had suffered from water damage. now i am redoing some of the work and trying to get it up and running. a very frustrating time to say the least. :-(

will try to reunite back axles with the chassis this week, thats if the new u bolt comes fairly soon, original one had lost most of its thread, now have a deadline to work to, june 2014 for the 70th aniversary in normandy, it will come round sooner than i think.

Hi John,

That sounds highly frustrating regarding the engine. I've bought a couple of manuals from Gardner Enthusiast but have found them to be pig ignorant on the phone. My i suggest Walsh engineering for Gardner services, and there are a few other good ones too.

I have stripped my engine, and it is due to go to a local specialist soon to have the white metal bearings refurbished then i will rebuild the rest. I've got most of the ancillarys and bolt ons already done ready to go on.

We refitted the back axle to ours over the summer and i have refitted the completly rebuilt front hubs and stub axles etc this last week. Would like to have it ready for 2014 but i only get weekends on it so progress is very slow.

I'm also not allowed to put photos on the net of the vehicle in its current location, but i'll add some photos of the engine rebuild to my thread as it comes together cos thats in my home workshop. All the best, and if i can lend any advice drop me a PM.

Richard

Still working on the engine, couldn't get the piston height the same across all the bores, finally took the crank to hindles in Bradford who say the big ends have not been ground correctly, mains were still standard, also found one of the white metal bearings on the mains damaged, this is after Gardner enthusiast was supposed to have rebuilt the bottom end ? At least now I know what's wrong and can repair it, trying to get her finished for Norma nay 2014 which doesn't seem so far away now, on a more positive note whinch is mostly done and have found somebody to give me a hand boarding the rear body, going to struggle to do much for the next 6 weeks with work comitments but then it will be full steam ahead again. The joys of vehicle restoration,!!!!!!! Very frustrating and rewarding in equal measures.

Hi Richard, just about everything, re ground crank new mains and big ends, new pistons and liners ,valve seats recut new valve guides and valves, recon injector pump and injectors, new timing chain, rebuilt starter nos dynamo and water pump, once you start where do you stop, it was in a very poor state when first dismantled, all the white metal bearings were starting to break up, looked like a jigsaw with pieces missing, plus I won't be parting with it any time soon and hopefully will be finished for Normandy next year so it needs to be right.

Good work mate. There's a few places doing Gardner bits, where did you get all your spares from?

I'm very glad that I haven't got to go to the expense of pistons and liners, but will certainly have to do a number of other things, and these crank bearings aren't gonna be cheap.

Richard
