Blyth Battery Opening 5th Sept 09

Recommended Posts

After restoration, the Blyth Battery opened earlier this year, and today they had an open day. The Battery was started in 1915 to guard Blyth Port, but it wasn't completed until 1918. During WW2, additional buildings were added, including a new ranging tower for the 6 inch guns. The Port was protected by the Battery due to it being a submarine base and an important coal shipping port.

WW1 buildings have been painted grey while WW2 additions are pink, a colour chosen as being original as any anticipated landings were expected at dawn or dusk, and it was said that the pink provided the best camo under these conditions.

Several vehicles and re-enactors turned up to support the opening, which also included a plaque unveiling by a US veteran from the 225th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Searchlight Battalion who were based there from March 1944 until May '44 when they left for D-Day arriving on Omaha later in June.

So to start with a few pictures of the battery.
