TBH, w+p has become a free for all. Every year they say RTA applies on site and yet nothing happens! I saw rex in his discovery waiting at the traffic lights with a quad bike with 3 10 yr olds on it and he did not say one word to them. If the show organiser won't say anything, what chance do the marshalls have?

I was talking to a marshall in the americas field who wanted the banned group from last year removed, and he told me rex said they could stay!!

On a positive note, I did see a marshall stop a young lad on a quad bike and escort him back to where his dad was camped.

What's going to happen when someone gets seriously injured or even killed on site? The lawyers will have a field day and the insurance companies will wash their hands of it on the basis of illegality. You can bet your bottom dollar that the organisers will claim that it is all the marshalls fault as they had been thoroughly briefed etc etc etc. Somebody will be made to 'carry the can' and that will be the erks. How do you pay the sort of compo that courts award these days, I wouldn.t like to be in their shoes when the bailiff comes a calling.

This year's show was definately the worst, with far more quads and green lawn mower tractors than before.

I will go there next year (no doubt for the last time) and take my camcorder to film what goes on - not so much for 'You've been Framed' but for the Heath & Safety Executive at the local town hall!

Now I wonder what can be done about the noisy parties still going on till 4am? Probably nothing as its private land. I tried calling the incident manager at 3am but nothing was done about it!

Other gripes:

Arrived Friday but could not find a pitch and yet acres of space was roped off for other owners - who never turned up anyway! Luckily EMLRA made room for us!

Exhibitors with white camper vans parked next to MVs with no thought what so ever for photographers wanting to take clear shots such as Compton Collection.

On a similar matter there always seemed to be a portaloo in every shot in every field!

RIP War & Noise Show - let's not all go anymore

To put things in a kind of perspective - we are down the show for nigh on two weeks and during that time heavy trucks and armour move all the time alongside pedestrians in an enclosed space the size of the Hop Farm. To date - to the best of my knowledge no one has been killed.

Conversely in the 1970's I was on every NATO exercise held in in Europe and all over Europe. The big "Crusader" exercises were also two week affairs with armour and heavy vehicles moving all over West Germany. These were also alongside "pedestrians" and fatalities there were not only known but expected. I can recall one year being in the same area as my O/C who was going ballistic down the radio about some US armour that had nearly taken one of his 8 man troops out - and he was told in no uncertain terms that X no of fatalities were expected and not until (IIRC) at least 25 fatalities were recorded would anything start to be done. As for toilet facilities - a hole in the bround and some leaves were about it - in comparison the show is ell served.

I know the quad bikes etc. with kids on are a PITA but lets give the show at least some credit folks - no one there has been killed or maimed by the heavy kit on display and in use!

The toilet facilities aren't that good - true. But in this modern life the £ is the new symbol of religion and no way will the bean counters at the Hop Farm pay for better facilities for a once a year show. I suspect if we get the HSE involved the final solution will be the show gets cancelled rather than part with the ££'s to make the required improvements.

I don't know what the shows future is now the IMPS contract has ended and, AFAIK, the free entry for members of more than 2 years standing has ended. How many owners will be prepared to pay £25 per vehicle? For me if all 3 are there thats £75 + the support vehicle and some have more than 3 vehicles there....

Don't jump the gun there Neil, IMPS have released no such statement that I am aware off & I believe they are in discussions with W&P/HF..

The simplest thing to do regarding under age quad bike riding would be to have half a dozen Police Officers on site through out the show to catch them. Then an escort back to the parents and the reading of the riot act and threat of prossocution should do the trick.

A guy I know is recovering from a quad bike accident in Canada (he lives there), 5 broken ribs, punctured lung and various other injuries. Look at Ozzy. Kids should NOT be riding these things, especially some that I saw that looked about 5 years old. Blame the parents, yes I certainly do. It only takes a kid to twist that throttle too much for someone to get seriously hurt or someones vehicle damaged. Something WILL happen along those lines, it's just a matter of when.

Just my twopence worth re 70s exercises and W&P etc..... Yes there were casualties in the big exercises (Bold Guard, Crusader, Keystone, etc) but a lot of it was to do with sleep deprivation (no drivers hours then) a lot of armour and other vehicles passing through high concentration of troops, often in darkness, low light, rain etc, bad comms between opposing umpires and armies-some radios were not compatible with each other. In some of our formations we had Sceptic tanks(Yanks) Danish Life Guards, Foreign Legion and Italians as part of orange forces all trying to muster, move, fight through and play to the serials or scenarios given (total nightmare with yanks blatting everything in front of them, Danish rally driving over positions, Frogs trying to steal all the kit and the Eyeties trying to retreat rapidly all in the space of 15 minutes of the first wave going in)

We had crown immunity then, loads of dosh -remember the Damcon cards giving prices if you took out a barn with a tank or ran across a beetroot field or knocked over a fence etc? Risk assessment were never heard of but risk taking expected up to a level of casualties before NODUFF endex was called. Then to cap it all we had to put up with the Ruski Soxmis cars trying to get info..... no wonder there were accidents.

I have never been to Beltring, but have been tempted in past, but from all of your posts above it sounds hellish.... Easy way is to risk assess the event to death (no pun or detrimental meaning here) re quad bikes etc- make the parents rersponsible to take a local period of liability insurance, produce paperwork and references to their sprogs abilities (or lack of) and accountable if they are unnacompanied or not properly supervised.

Yes if there is a seperate area they can use make sure this is the ONLY area they do and if they infringe on local rules and regs (or break the law- RTA, speeding, uninsured etc) throw them out after doing the walk of shame off the site.

With loads of re-enactors about why not invite or form an MP company who have sole responsibility for silent hours (is there ever such a thing at W&P?) policing under auspices of chief marshall/ owners etc- with everyone KNOWING they are the local law and although no power of arrest etc they will report incident asap to head shed to deal with at earliest opportunity. MP Re-enactors would actually be doing what they should be and in real time scenarios, not as unpaid labour but with some recognition, gratuity to their group etc and publicity it would be a nice carrot for wannabe provo sergeants. Failing that me and some of my Para colleagues can go round up the offenders take them away and punch utter S**t out of them (only joking:rofl:)

Ok nuff said just my thoughts after following every thread of W&P over past couple of weeks (puts on kevlar and body armour for the incoming...)

That's the problem, those that haven't been before are put off by those that don't go... it's nowhere near as bad as the threads read... if it was then W&P would of been shut down years ago or it wouldn't be filled to capacity every year with exhibitors. Infact it was bussier this year with another field being opened up for MV's. Most of those that moan still come back every year..

Give it a go & see for yourself...

This year was our 10th time.

Problems? Inconveniences? Genny's?, Late partys? Quadkids, toilet-troubles? Mud, heat, wind, rain, cold? Heli's?

Things which are to be expected.

The fun and friendships totally outweigh the downsides!

the thread does read like a nightmare it has to be said i can see a lot of points getting raised that are very valid indeed

i have only been twice last year and around 8 years ago and though it was a world beating spectacle

i cant realy add to a lot of what has been said having never camped

but you would have to work extremly hard to build up a worthy rival to the war and peace

somthing middle of the country would be nice but where and who can pull it off

I think a quote from a well known film sums up this thread;

"always with the negative waves, Moriarty"

there are far too many good things that could be said about the event, I have been entered in every one since it came to the Hop Farm and have never had problems.

Any where you have such a large event there will be some sort of problems, it's inevetible. I bet if you compare the stats of Glastonbury the H&S problems at W&P are nowhere near as bad..

The number of arrests at this year’s Glastonbury festival has already exceeded the whole of the 2008 event.

116 festivalgoers people have been arrested so far, compared to a total of 89 in 2008.

The number of music fans admitted to the medical centre is also up on 2008 at 1793, while 31 people have taken to hospital.

Last year, 1466 people were treated during the whole festival.

& that was only by the second day.. Think they will shut that down... think not..

137000 tickets avaliable at glastonbury(according to the BBC), which is an event based on music at lots of alcohol, can't see the comparison with w+p.

Ive been going to w+p for about 15yrs and have always enjoyed it, however, the lunitic quad bikers are getting worse every year and starting to spoil it.

I was just pointing out where ever there's a large event there will be H&S issues... W&P is not a one off in respect of that..

This is the main reason i attend the show. To see people who i may only see once /or maybe twice a year and i must admitt this year i didn`t get to see some of those at all, but there again made new aquaintances which i am sure will be a life long path to follow and enjoy.
