  1. Just received this from IMPS who say that applications must be received before the end of this month:

This email only concerns you if you are planning to take armour to Normandy for the 80th Anniversary of D-Day, whether attending with the club or making your own travel and/or accommodation arrangements.

If you are NOT taking armour to Normandy this year, please disregard this message.

We have been informed that all armour will require a pass, which we can obtain for you. Without a pass, you will not be allowed to travel within Normandy and you may be refused entry into France.

YOU MUST ACT NOW if you require a pass for Normandy, by doing the following:

E-mail info@ltf-hq.com with your name, IMPS Membership number, and type of vehicle

  2. Certainly ours looks like one of the Metamet "Saloon" Jeeps!  Thanks for posting.  Dad swapped the Jeep for an A35 Austin for a while until along came a green Series 1 Land Rover soft top!  We used to play at "soldiers" in it - probably sowed the seeds for my MV addiction!

  3. I just came across this old family photo which shows our home in about 1950, when my father was working as a civil engineer on various jobs across the UK.  Hence we lived like gypsies for a few years.  I recall Dad talking about this Jeep, supplied by his employer.  It looks like a civilianised version - based on surplus WW2 vehicle??  Presumably there was brisk trade in these things with a shortage of cars post-war?  (The quality is not good I'm afraid - from a very small photo)

  4. "BLUEPRINT FOR NETWORK OF SUPER (4000,000 volt) ".  And of course, Ruxy, they have to have quite a lot of juice to stuff down those "motorways"!  As we are only just about keeping up with existing demand for electricity and increased demand by virtue of increased population, I am not sure how they are going to generate sufficient to offset the HUGE amount of power we currently access from fossil fuels..........and Government has no plan either - that makes any sense to engineers.  There will be a very big energy gap if things carry on as they are - and that gap will be filled by Joe Public being forced to rely on public transport - when and where they can get it, and having homes heated by things like the much vaunted heat pump - that inconveniently makes no economic or practical sense for 85% of households - ie we will be freezing our nuts off - which makes global warming seem quite attractive!

  5. Utt61 "I was sure I had read that the ban DID include hybrids, and I remember wondering why anyone would buy a hybrid in this case. Perhaps either I have mis-remembered or the policy has changed."  As Ruxy comments, Sunak's postponement of the ban on new fossil-fuelled cars is essentially required because there is no way the country would be ready for that many electric cars.  The investment in charging infrastructure s non-existent and there is no credible energy plan that will allow loss of hydrocarbon fuels to be offset by electricity generation.  So he is just kicking the can down the road because really they have not a clue - and neither does any other political party!  On a more practical note, I am on my second Toyota-system hybrid auto and they are just brilliant -  a very sensible use of inboard electricity generation, a lot of technology drawn from F1........we currently run a 2 tonne 3.5L hybrid car that does 50 mpg on the motorway and 70 mpg in town!  So there's certainly room for sensible adoption of new technologies.  Alas, we are driven by politics and politicians it seems.

  6. I would not worry too much; when our generation pops its clogs, there will be very few people left who care a jot about internal combustion vehicles and the bulk of those Jeeps and Dodges, etc will be so much scrap.  Enjoy it while you can!

  7. Agreed - I visit the site rarely now as its just too silly and no-one seems to be fixing it!  And no, I am not changing my browser that works perfectly well.  This site was ad-free, so why not now?

  8. "they want the proletariat to use public transport or a bicycle! "  Totally agree; there is no way that the "de-carbonisation" in UK is going to allow folk to use private transport as they do now; Government are making no real effort to provide the infrastructure needed to swap everyone over and all the private sector is interest in is making a fast buck out of it all (using the model provided by the water companies).

  9. A motorcycling magazine recently ran an analysis on accidents for motorcyclists by age group - which really gives a very accented take on statistics as they are a vulnerable group of course.  In essence, older riders had fewer accidents BUT older riders suffered more severe accidents, in terms of injury.  Which is pretty much as you would expect - older riders are safer, but bodies more fragile.  So should the old be penalised for having more fragile bodies?  I am sure you could knock that back as being completely ageist!

  10. Just watched again the rather good film, 'Murphy's War'.  Best bits are the flying sequences of the Grumman seaplane - quite spectacular both on the water and in the air! Must have been "fun" doing these!!

  11. I use an additive to combat the effects of ethanol re water, etc. (yes, the ethanol pulls water out of the atmosphere and the ethanol/water mix sinks to the bottom of your tank.  Nice experiment on line showing ethanol containing fuel being shaken up with coloured water in a big pop bottle........left to settle, the coloured water/ethanol separates out at the bottom and on top floats the petrol with no ethanol.).  But I would not chuck out your old fuel; as AmmoMan says, fill up with fresh - maybe put in an additive (plenty around).  My Lightweight has old fuel in it (12 months plus, but with additive) and no problem with running.  These engines will run happily on pretty basic fuel. Lots of other reasons for rough running - spark plugs, etc..

  12. The current IMPS Newsletter lists War & Peace Show in its calendar of events for 2023 - optimistically perhaps although yes, the W&P website does say a 2023 is scheduled.  Anyhow, academic probably as I doubt they will get many takers!
