  1. Hi- trying to contact jim fl4 regarding this- please check your PMs!
  2. If your going to remove paint with grinder you are better off fitting a wire wheel rather than paddle disc. I did my entire carrier this way. paper suit and a good respirator are a must. you get a nice finish on the steel where upon you can spray your etch primer base.
  3. track pins, old 1930's light bulb (undamaged), parts of a ford dash panel, some war dated Canadian coins.
  4. Stud extractors would be a last resort for me... They are hardened and if they snap they are a pig to drill out... It's doable but what a pain ! As as for drilling then tapping and inserting bolts etc ? Don't bother..... If that's the road you need to go down then helicoil the thing. I have had to helicoil a number of head stud holes on engine blocks over the years, if done properly they are an excellent fix. Richards method of the nut is preferable route too.... You find that the heat from the welding often cracks the stud free too. good luck !
  5. There is a very nice Mk1 on milweb for sale at the moment cough cough 😜
  6. Heat the stud up cherry red and melt paraffin wax on the hot nut.... The wax penetrates into the threads. Allow to cool... Re heat and the nut / stud will extract. Alternate soak it in diesel. i have used the paraffin wax method many times 100% success.
  7. Ahh the hedge carrier raises its head again. Owned by the trustees of the steam museum, they would rather watch it rust to nothing than see it resurrected. Kev Powles spent time and effort trying to get it, as did I, as have many others. It's very much of a case of "it's mine, I won't use it...you can't buy it". The floors have gone, as have the track guards, centre bulkhead is on it's way..... It would be very very costly to save this carrier now.... Trust me I have been there and done it !
  8. Paul how tall is the machine ? I cannot believe you manage to fit it in a garage !
  9. I have just recently rebuilt one mark... You have my email address so drop me a line with your questions and I will do my best to help. if you lived in the UK I would have happily rebuilt it for you. The colour of the engine varies depending on if it was a ford or a merc, usually mercy were a dark blue/grey. Some lads paint theirs in that REME eggshell which is still used today on CVRT packs. Some footage of the very first time my carrier moved under its own steam.... Lots of brake checks down the driveway before making my turn !
  10. I went this year with the carrier (which was finished less than a week before the show) don't think I will take it back the cost for transport was off the chart ! I was not massively impressed with the way the traffic management was deployed.... And for me personally there was not a good balance between British Canadian and out commonwealth family, US and axis... It seemed very top heavy with US and axis kit. People cutting about in SS kit and German uniform with swastika's on etc does not sit very well with me ( and I don't want to start a bun fight here it's only my opinion and I understand that that part of the war should be displayed)
  11. 3.75 T and combat weight which is the same as W&P weight puts ten up to 4T.... So 18T truck minimum, if you can get your hands on an 18T skip lorry, your laughing !!! Speed limits for carriers are actually 20mph as you have suspension and resilient material (rubber) present, which has to either be on the wheels or the tracks, otherwise it's 5 mph as Rick has said.... Mind with steel tracks it's like driving a bus over sheet glass covered in marbles !
  12. My Mk1 is booked in, if I can get transport there that won't bankrupt me?
  13. I have a bren carrier that needs transporting from Newcastle upon Tyne to the show and back ? I would be there from the Friday before until the Monday after.
  14. Anyone passing Newcastle upon Tyne with a low loader and have space for a carrier ? I may be sharing a load elsewhere but it's still up in the air and I like to keep my options open i will be at the event from the Monday prior until the Monday after the show. cheers Richie
