  1. I recall that we had a D4 on our POM 0-2 78/10. Used for familiarisation not for serious work as they said it was getting past it. Used by the guys on the 100b's rather than the D6's
  2. Would Wide Gauge mean Wide Tracks? If so could be for working in soft ground.
  3. Looks very similar to some cranes that were used in BR Works like BREL York or Derby.
  4. Cab has been freed off, awaiting a lift. Then the cab to be sent to a fabricator who will build a new cab, the old steel is too badly deformed with rust lamination to do anything with. Some other bodywork being done in the meantime. All controls removed from cab, now being cleaned up and painted.
  5. If you know roughly where you want to look, would Google maps help? https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Waterbeach,+Cambridge/@52.2846044,0.1771389,1203m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x47d871fdba77856f:0x557eedf4e5006987!8m2!3d52.265582!4d0.191002?hl=en-GB If wondering what the black circles were for. They are practise bomb craters for the RE repair teams to play with.
  6. Tip when using a Hydroburner. Do not set up in a roadside layby and use a convenient pile of chippings to bury the flame tunnel sides. WW3 will break out within minutes. Secondly only refuel a Hydroburner with flame off and all pressure released. Unless you really want throwing in the sea followed by a CASEVAC from Akamas beach ranges in Cyprus to the nearest Hospital with very serious burns. Fortunately our camp had been set up 5 yards from the waters edge. The clown of a cook who did this spent 6 months in Netley recovering and was made Field Cookery Instructor on his return.
  7. Found this website from the MOD. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/defence-imagery Meant to cover photos up to 10 years old. Or for photos over 10 use the IWM https://www.gov.uk/guidance/defence-imagery#historical-imagery-and-the-role-of-the-imperial-war-museum
  8. Things are progressing. The question of what colour paint is being asked. Can anyone let me know what would be the correct livery for Suez service around 1945. Also need to know about the cab interior.
  9. On Excercise out of Iserlohn back in 1983 and driving my MK all over the place. I double skinned the back and lowered it as was usual then dug out 4 Charlie G carry straps and rigged a stretcher up in the roof, the Sleeping bag stayed put for the week. Very comfortable.
  10. At auction in Carlisle. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-60546152
  11. That sparks a memory. When I was in the TA with 234 sqn We went on an exchange, for our 2 week stint, with a US Unit on Cape Cod at OTIS Airbase around 1994. Besides having a number of flights in Huey's or other choppers or planes and flying over to the states and back in a Tanker KC 135 fuelling a B52 en route. While there they had us Tree clearing, Road building and a few other jobs. Off to one end of the Airfield waas a dump area for stone, rubble etc with a big quarry loader looking afer the loading and stockpiling. Of course we had to have a go, which was when we found out that the cab was on the wrong half, a really weird sensation trying to operate it. None of our regular operators who tried it liked it and found it awkward to use with no confidence in if the machine would stay upright. No photos taken of it and no idea if it was your 285
  12. I was in 52 At Perham Down , Tidworth from 78 - Nov 82 covering RAF Bruggen. Then TA from 86 - 95 with 234 Fd Sqn at RAF Leeming.back on the ADR. One other Michy photo came to light today. Who ever thought it was a good idea to Cam up a 275. I forget how many nets it took with the bomb mat trailer as well. Other photo may be a 275 inn a bag, either that or a Grader in the preservation store area.
  13. I would suggest that VITROLL is more likely to be VIBROLL.
  14. 275 ready for a road run to Vilich(?) workshops back in 81. 52 Fd Sqn Const RE I seem to recall someone misreading a sign and we ended up on an Autobahn. When I moved over to 234 TA at RAF Leeming our machines grew a bit with a TEREX 72-71
  15. Did some Civilian vehicles run on Gas supplied from an inflatable bag strapped to the roof?
  16. Will it need to be tested and certified? Or will it never see a load.
  17. We have some progress. Recently the Loco was moved from Pickering on the NYMR and now resides at the Derwent Valley Railway at Murton near York. One of the guys working on the Loco has set up a webpage to show progress. http://tonysimons.me.uk/Drewry/ Some of the photos are before and after showing the amount of Cab pipework and fittings that have been removed. This is so that the cab can be removed to fabricate a new one. The existing cab is too corroded to be reused.Does anybody have any photos of its earlier life at BP Saltend up to 1984or any of the other refineries or even in military service.
  18. The water looks very calm. Is this on a River or a Lake of some description? Also is that a Railway or Road with the retaining wall.
  19. How do you get to a casualty in the farmers field outside the perimeter fence? Its why Crash Gates are provided and may also include the provision of bridging across rivers. RAF Leeming had for many years a Triple / Triple Bailey bridge, (possiby 150 - 200ft span) over the Swale at one of it's crash gates leading to fields.
  20. Thanks for that. The link can be found at https://www.thinkdefence.co.uk/port-stanley-airport-before-during-and-after-1982/
  21. Does anybody have any photos of these trailers used in the repair of Bomb Damaged craters on Airfield Operating Surfaces. Self loading Bomb Mat Trailer usually towed by a Haulamatic, Empty, Loading and Loaded if possible. Screed Beam trailer, usually hauled by a Haulamatic. Both Stowed and loaded configurations if possible. Sykes dewatering pump usually hauled by a Bedford 4 tonner MK or a TK 6kva Generator Trailer. usually hauled by a L/Rover 90 Compactor drop weight trailer, usually hauled by the Compactor Crane. I would like to use the photos as part of a presentation and not for commercial use. Missed my chance of taking any photos when I was behind the wheel of a Volvo Bucket or as a Crater Commander. Thanks in advance.
  22. I recall a stubborn tyre on a Allis Bucket at RAF Bruggen back in 1981. Eventually dropped a Dozer blade on the tyre, that shifted it.
  23. Take it out on the vehicle into the woods and live in it for a couple of weeks. The wetter and muddier the better.
  24. My 1978 CL Series 3 has a gloss red tow hook. From before I acquired it. If I get to repaint the vehicle it will probably remain red as is.unless it can be prooved what it should be.
