    l will admit having more than a pasting interest in The AUSTIN CHAMP not only who spent many hours working on them but the history of them which prompted to dig out their tech manuals which l got over fifty years ago they like me have aged covered in oily finger prints turned yellow and on some page spots of blood dam crown wheel and pinions l will watch with interest your efforts there are some parts here in uk found NOS RIGHT HAND REAR WHEEL cylinders seal kits but those should be available in the states.     if you cannot get original front brake cylinders you can make use of series twoA LAND ROVER brake cylinders you just have to remove a small amount from the casting to make them fit the rears because of how the hand brake linkage is part of the casting is a different matter l would if salvageable have them sleeved if the bores pitted there are a company or two in UK that sell champ parts l can ask about availability for you

    A number of CHAMPS were sold by the MOD in germany those can be found in a number EUROPEAN countries restored by their civilian owners yours was sold in germany as l said

    The FV 18O2A prototype or box champ did indeed have flasher type indicators the lighting on champs did change the rear trumpet style tail lights and replaced by the round screw in glass type as seen on later land rovers also the same style indicators were fitted. BAOR modification MOD 1 fit semiphores MOD 5 electric 24 volt trafficators as l pointed out l never saw them but l did see the later type

    As it was sold in europe there is ever chance it stayed there until coming to the states it entered into army service in 1954 and was the cargo version not FFW fitted for wireless

    ALL military champs were 24 volt and you could buy 24 volt semiphore indicators the question is were they fitted to champs while used by the military

    what ever you do there are problems put in a building you need to control the humidity put a roof over it the changes in heat the list go's on wind direction there are advantages to leaving in the open

    MARK there many people on this site that know of these gate guardians they are dotted all over this country. I for one have sent vehicles to be gate guardians to parts of this country and have a interest in their fate the one's at LECONFIELD which is ten minutes from my home l made my comments as stated on them at the time of them been first discussed also l have had the task of preserving one of the large's out door gate guardians the BLACKBURN BEVERLEY slapping paint on it is not the answer there is much more to it at this moment l am more interested in the one's on my door step

    semiphore indicators were fitted to some series one land rovers in military service but l have never come across champs with them fitted but that does not mean they could have been but all the one's that have worked on never once did l come across them My feeling is they were fitted when they left military service

    as l said at the end of the day it comes down to cost those who once had a connection with these vehicles and arranged there placing have long moved on

    I recall a meeting in the late 1990s about having gate guardian at LECONFIELD there are now a few dotted around the camp; There was at the time a reluctance to have them it was pointed out that it was all well and good but they needed on going care something l had experience of at the museum and if even labour was free there would still be costs.
