  1. Make sure the lift pump is working ok. Remove both the input and output lines, can you feel any suck on the tank connection if you operate the pump? Maybe a new old stock pump could do with a little diesel in it first to prime the pump and get the valves working ok.
  2. Hello Andy, first you need to make sure that the feed from the lift pump to the injector pump is open to air so that as you pump the lift pump it removes the air from the sedimentor to atmosphere. This means you need find the recommended bleed points, then open the nearest to the output from the lift pump. Sometimes its OK crack open the output pipe connection from the lift pump, then pump away till you start to get fuel up through the sedimentor. Once this happens retighten the connections, open the next bleed point on the injection pump and remove the air by pumping. Sometimes the lift pump movement is at full stroke on the cam from the engine position so you may need to turn the engine 180 degrees or so. If you have plenty of battery power you can use the starter to speed things up, but make sure you dont run out of battery! Hope this helps.
  3. Use switch position 1 to load rack. Continue the load operation until the "no trans" light goes out. This signifies its safe to drive off. Dont drive off with switch in any other position than 0. See attached image of lhs control panel. Good luck, let us know how it goes. lhs.pdf
  4. Hi Paul, the engine filter is a perkins OD 19596, any truck spares company should be able to get one. The filter nearest the fuel tank is a sedimenter/ heater assy so no replaceable element here. May be worth blanking the end of the fuel pickup and pressure testing the pipework, including the sedimenter. The fuel shut off valve is also at a mid tank level so include this in the tests. 15psi is the normal test pressure for this type of component, (but doesnt allways show a suction leak). Good luck.
  5. I've often wondered this. I've never noticed any ex mod white paint for vehicles, plenty of green, light stone, black, but not white. My trailer was painted white with a UN on it when I got it. It was a reme stores trailer and was in Sarajevo. the paint was semi matt, (or semi shiny!), and was terrible to sand down.
  6. My brother in law recently had the lead taken from his conservatory. He lives in a terraced house in Ashbourne Kent, even though they were both at home at the time. Nothing is safe! I was working in a scap dealers a while ago, Its a large company seperating and melting down several metals. Next door to the Laboratory was a large shed with a set of scales in the middle and I watched as all day cars pulled up to the scales, off loaded into the scales and then got paid. It all looked dodgy. This is the reason scrap is stolen....its easy to offload it.
  7. Viton is the most suitable material for this type of fuel. Its what we use in our spectrometers used for fuel oil analysis
  8. I havent used one in years. With modern fuels the actual timing thats best for the vehicle can only be acurately set by road testing. The advance value in manuals, especially for older vehicles is no more than a ball park figure. If you want one go for a cheapie. The only time I would use one is to see if the advance is working as the revs increase and that there is no instability due to wear etc.
  9. Nice pictures, they look impressive off road. Maybe I wont get too stuck at muddy shows when I get mine on the road! many thanks for posting.
  10. What you need is one of these: They are available online, this is an example: http://www.tyre-equipment.co.uk/acatalog/Industrial_Valves.html I found a complete kit at a show several years ago. I use argon from our mig welder. I normally put in about 600 psi, then reduce it, using a pressure gauge with a rubber adaptor on it, to 500 psi. Let me know how you get on.
  11. This is always a good show, close to Milton Keynes and Northampton. This year they have a replica spitfire as a static display and are looking for period RAF vehicles to display alongside it. Can anyone help them with this? They also have a flypast of a spitfire and Dakota. Info on their website, you can also book online as well. We always go and have a good weekend, usually a large turnout of military, plus lots of stalls. Website: http://www.stokegoldington-steamrally.co.uk/ vehicle bookings: Tel:Roy Gill 01908 551994 until 8:30pm
  12. Those are wiring outlets for turn lights (indicators to you and me). They were added at a later date, sometime during the 60's I think. Thats why some pictures wont show them if they were taken before the mod. Excellent pictures, thanks.
  13. The 30-06 round used in the 30 cal is longer than the 7.62 round, the ammo boxes for 30 cal are wider to accept the longer round. All my saladin boxes are labelled as 7.62 but are actually 30 cal boxes with an insert inside to reduce the width to that of the 7.62 round. Not sure where I got the boxes but they were like new. I guess there must have been a lot of 30 cal boxes in store. My roof mounted 30 cal was converted to 7.62, although the belt of ammo I use is 30-06. Its good to be confusing!
  14. I had a similar problem in my Saladin, although backwards to yours! I replaced all the low pressure pipework to cure the issue. Also check the flexible pipe from the pump to a bracket on the hull. It can be difficult to pin point these sorts of leaks as the hull catches everything and diverts your attention! Good luck!
  15. This is the only picture I can find at the moment. Its from an early parts manual. At least it looks like a kit to make a 30 cal mounting! The mounting on my saladin is a modified mount form a Cent so it wont be too usefull. Good Luck 30 cal1.pdf
  16. At the age of 17 I had just passed my driving test and worked part time at a garage in Dunstable. The workshop manager had a carrier, and then a dingo. I was fascinated, and when he started buying lots of champs after advertising for them in an ad in the Exchange and Mart paper I was really hooked. I ended up with one, it was my only transport to work for a year and really earned its keep!
  17. Do you still have the original battery boxes? If you do, I recommend fitting some reasonably sized batteries, not just going for the 60Ah originally specified. This is useful if you need to turn the engine over a lot if you have any problems. The last thing you need is a flat battery! I have a Saladin and use batteries with the reference 643. These give a good compromise on size and price, and easily fit inside the battery boxes. One thing to check is do you still have the original battery connectors on the end of the battery leads. The original connectors were a flat fitting with 2 bolts in them. You can get 4 standard new terminals and cut the old ones off. Many years ago I got some convertor connectors, but haven't seen any recently. Any local truck factors should be able to supply the batteries and terminals. Hope this helps
  18. The last few times I took my Foden for its MOT the testers would remind me to keep looking at the Vosa website as the rules were changing. As far as I am concerned I will definately be using a tacho, and will keep a hard copy diary with a copy of my hours from my day job in it. Luckily I dont work more than 44 hrs on average, and the shows I goto are very local, so I should be ok. I discused fitting and calibrating the tacho with my local authorised tacho centre, they wanted to fit a digital tacho, costing over £1200 ! I spoke to vosa who assure me I can use an analogue one, much cheaper and easier to keep a copy of my hours! Looking at operating licences, for private use you dont need an operating license, but reading vosas documents, they dont list private use as an exemption. I think this is because they refer to operating licenses for commercial carriage of goods only. I would still like to see it in black and white though.
  19. TOMMY COOPER JOKES ............ 1. Two blondes walk into a building..........you'd think at least one of them would have seen it. 2. Phone answering machine message - '...If you want to buy marijuana, press the hash key...' 3. A guy walks into the psychiatrist wearing only Clingfilm for shorts. The shrink says, 'Well, I can clearly see you're nuts.' 4. I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn't find any. 5. I went to the butchers the other day and I bet him 50 quid that he couldn't reach the meat off the top shelf. He said, 'No, the steaks are too high.' 6. My friend drowned in a bowl of muesli. A strong currant pulled him in. 7. A man came round in hospital after a serious accident. He shouted, 'Doctor, doctor, I can't feel my legs!' The doctor replied, 'I know you can't, I've cut your arms off'. 8. I went to a seafood disco last week, and pulled a muscle. 9. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly. They lit a fire in the craft, it sank, proving once and for all that you can't have your kayak and heat it. 10. Our ice cream man was found lying on the floor of his van covered with hundreds and thousands. Police say that he topped himself. 11. Man goes to the doctor, with a strawberry growing out of his head. Doc says 'I'll give you some cream to put on it.' 12. 'Doc I can't stop singing 'The Green, Green Grass of Home' 'That sounds like Tom Jones syndrome. ' 'Is it common?' 'It's not unusual....' 13. A man takes his Rotteweiller to the vet. 'My dog is cross-eyed, is there anything you can do for him?' 'Well,' said the vet, 'let's have a look at him.' So he picks the dog up and examines his eyes, then he checks his teeth. Finally, he says, 'I'm going to have to put him down.' 'What? Because he's cross-eyed?' 'No, because he's really heavy.' 14. Guy goes into the doctor's. 'Doc, I've got a cricket ball stuck up my bottom..' 'How's that?' 'Don't you start.' 15. Two elephants walk off a cliff...boom, boom! 16. What do you call a fish with no eyes? A fsh. 17. So I was getting into my car, and this bloke says to me 'Can you give me a lift?' I said 'Sure, you look great, the world's your oyster, go for it!' 18. Apparently, 1 in 5 people in the world are Chinese. There are 5 people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my Dad, or my older brother Colin, or my younger brother Ho-Cha-Chu. But I think it's Colin. 19. Two fat blokes in a pub, one says to the other 'Your round.' The other one says 'So are you, you fat b##tard!' 20. Police arrested two kids yesterday, one was drinking battery acid, and the other was eating fireworks. They charged one and let the other one off. 21. 'You know, somebody actually complimented me on my driving today. They left a little note on the windscreen. It said, 'Parking Fine.' So that was nice.' 22. A man walked into the doctors, he said, 'I've hurt my arm in several places.' The doctor said, 'Well don't go there anymore.' 23. Ireland 's worst air disaster occurred early this morning when a small two-seater Cessna plane crashed into a cemetery. Irish search and rescue workers have recovered 1826 bodies so far and expect that number to climb as digging continues into the night.
  20. I have done some investigations on this issue. I had a Foden that was exempt from Tacho requirements for private use. When I took the truck for its yearly MOT I completed a tacho exemption form, available here: http://www.dft.gov.uk/vosa/repository/HGV%20Tachograph%20Exemption%20Declaration%20Form.pdf The exemption I had was the vehicle was over 25 years old and is not used commercially. The Fox is just under 7.5 tonnes, so if it is not over 25 years old it should fall under exemption 4 on the form. However I am now in the process of getting a 1992 drops ready for the same task. After several calls, including some to Vosa, I will have to use a tacho when driving this vehicle. This means I will have to have it installed, calibrated and routinely checked to satisfy the requirements. What is also of concern is that the working hours directive applies. This means that my normal daytime job has to be taken into account in the number of hours I can drive for, even though my normal daytime job is not driving HGV's. It is a bit of a minefield out there, at least you have some armour for protection!!

    problems

What is it with AOL? I know its a revamped version of IE but it certainly causes more issues than is warranted.

    problems

I had the same problem yesterday (Friday), it was very slow through AOl, but ok using IE or Mozilla. I cleaned all my cache, cookies and temp files but it made no change. Today its OK through AOL. Confusing eh?
  23. Yes it did sound off its peak, but hey it got there! My Saladin also felt a bit sick! Runing like a pig at one time, then its ok. Give me something to look at along with the other major projects over the winter!
  24. Managed to take loads of pictures of the turret interior yesterday. I will zip them up and email them directly if you like. Do you have an individual download size limit on your email as they will be quite a large size?
  25. I have just looked at my copy of The technique of shooting from AFV's part 4 the application of fire from Saladin, dated 1967 Army code 70406. In this it states "Having identified the target the commander will estimate the range to it and give a fire order, simultaneously loading the gun." Indeed the breech loading lever is on the commanders side (right side). I can take some photos over the weekend, if you want any specific parts photographing let me know. If you are local to Milton Keynes come over to John Marchants, we will be having a play this weekend, and my Saladin is there.
