  1. Very nice, Guy! thanks for pointing me in the right direction, it'll be great to see a new restoration thread on your QL! All the best, Simon.
  2. Welcome! lovely looking bikes, any pictures of the QL? :-) Simon.
  3. Hi Dave, would love to see a picture, the M38A1 is one of my all time favorites, I would love to do one as a project one day! All the best, Simon.
  4. Welcome to the forum, Simon.
  5. Hi Rob, fear not your post is fine! there is a lot of knowledge on this site, the people here are really helpful and friendly - I've spent hours on this site before now and only stop reading when my brain starts to implode. :-D If you ever decide to go.. post war, I have a nice collection of mutts for restoration :cool2: Simon.
  6. Thanks Chaps, and I will try the lacquer trick - I have been using spray copper grease up til now, but can see all manner of cr:nut:p sticking to that. Simon.
  7. Cured it! ran a heavy earth to the gearbox then to bulkhead, all electrics are working well.
  8. Hi All, I have a P reg 90 300tdi defender that I am having problems with, I hope someone can point me in the right direction. I have just finished the rear cross member along with other issues, its now time for MOT - however, I took it down there and the electrics were causing grief. It was failed because the headlights dim slightly every time the indicators flash. I cleaned the earths under the seatbox on the gearbox and took it for a re-test today. It was fine when it was here, drove it to the garage and it was playing up more than ever!! with the lights and the indicators on, the fog light warning light was faintly on and the radio was also effected - on top of the front lights playing up. I really am at my wits end with it and only have 2 days to cure the electrics before I loose the free retest. any ideas guys? the only thing I can think to do is a new earth off the bulkhead to g/box? where are the earths located? Also with wipers headlights and heater on, neither work to their optimum or anywhere near. (the rear of the car is not effected) The chap at the garage told me tap into the earths on ALL of the front lights, and the rear indicators, then earth onto the chassis, I don't think that is the best answer? any input would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks, Simon.
  9. I would be interested in seeing in-service pictures too. Simon.
  10. That is eye watering! Thanks for the post, although I may struggle sleeping tonight thinking about that lot getting cut up!! I know its not worth as much, but I do love the Russian kit! Simon.
  11. Great to see it survive the Scrap men - High prices are seeing off too many hedgerow treasures! Simon.
  12. Hi All, Found this interesting little gem today and thought I would take a few pictures for you to see. This is my Gran's Indian driving licence, she lived there for a few years, working as a medicine dispenser, coming back to England in the early '40's to serve as ambulance crew. Simon.
  13. I couldn't agree more! Clocked over 10hours with my little MF 133 this week, its fitted with a ad3 152 Perkins and I calculated the fuel burn rate, it was averaging 2.25 litres per hour @1700rpm (pto speed) slightly more economical than the 35, however, my 35 is currently undergoing a full engine rebuild using genuine Perkins parts, its also had its injectors serviced, so ill be keen to re-calculate its fuel consumption, I expect with both engines in good condition, will average out to a similar figure. Personally, I prefer the A3 152 fitted to the 35x (indirect injection, but slightly more power than normal 35 3cyl.) To the ad3 152 fitted to the 133-135 as I find it a much softer and more forgiving when pottering about the yard with low revs. Its all down to personal preference I guess, Im a die hard Massey fan so perhaps a bit bias, I would find it difficult to knock either machine, 35 or 135.
  14. You have to see it to believe it! took the spare off the champ to find more than I bargained for!
  15. There was a 'TAFE' for sale in our village, chap wanted £1450, it was basically a copy of a massey 240, which is not much more than an updated 135. it had a safety cab, pick up hitch etc. etc. naturally it flew away for that price, I imagine something like that would fit your needs perfectly.
  16. That Sounds feasible, I had it on a weigh bridge once and it showed it weighed approximately 1600kg, so the top number could very well be a reference to the weight. The numbers read: T. 1530 PB 4375 Thanks, Simon.
  17. It's time for me to pick your brains once more, any ideas as to what these numbers are about? the tractor is a french built 1970 Massey-ferguson 133 MK111 vineyard tractor, I imported from a farm in Portugal and registered this tractor myself. Finding anything out about this unusual machine is proving difficult. It's currently out in a hayfield working, so I wont be able to take a clear picture until later on when I go down there, I have scoured through my collection of photos and the clearest one of the numbers and their location is this picture of my mate on it at a show a few months ago.
  18. another thought is a engine powered tow-along topper behind a 432 :-D It wont grow back in a hurry...
  19. I feel I aught to say something, I love my classic massey tractors, and highly rate the perkins 3pot engines in them. over the years I have owned many ferguson, and massey tractors, The one I would never part with, being my '63 35X which over the years I have restored and is used regularly as a loader tractor and really owns it's keep. While I have little experience of the Major myself I have a nut case friend with a field full, and as much as it pains me to admit it, they are good tools. Value for money wise I would say vintage is the way forward, as a good one will hold it's value well, and be very reliable when maintained well. Which you go for, is largely down to you, make sure it is something you are comfortable with, any machine will operate well in the hands of someone that knows it's capabilities. Your not immune from roll-over in a fordson, nor are you with a massey ferguson or any other tractor. I would sway to a 135 myself, simply because I know the tractors well they are very frugal with regards to fuel and the parts back up is exceptional. However, I would have to admit myself, the prices are high. Another consideration is small, compact tractors hold their value very well, yes, BUT because of this, you have a very valuable small easy to steal (fit in a van) machine - that would be a concern to me. finally, Ed, don't knock perkins engines too hard, there was a reason they put the P6 in the major Simon.
  20. Thanks guys, I will hope that an earth is the problem. I think there is an electrical involvement with the steering, despite having a pump? possibly for some sort of stability management, I seem to remember when we bought it seeing a list of abbreviated c@#p it has on it to make it 'drive better' - Or to make it so hideously over complicated you need to re-mortgage the house ever time it develops a fault! However, now you mention water penetration, I remember a very similar problem on my mum's diesel passat about 6years ago, that was water in an ecu but she forgot to close the sunroof and left in in the drive during a thunderstorm! It wrote the car off as the quotes coming in for a fix were serious ££££ I'm glad it's happened now though, it was going in for a cambelt next week!! I would be very un-impressed if it started this game after i'd picked up the tab for that! I think I'll stick with my landrover!
  21. Sorry, I know this is quite a step from MV's! but have any of you had or heard of the same or similar problem? It would seem like it's not uncommon hence the ask. The car in question is my other-halves Vauxhall astra, it's a 55plate with 1.7ctdi engine its done nearly 100k if that makes any odds. The problem: in the past week it has been doing subtle things to play up, ie, lights not wanting to dip and it wouldnt lock one night. However, yesterday, started it, it sounded well rough and was tick over was 300rpm higher than normal, turned it off, and on, drove it to town, no issuses. That night, took the car to our friends house, idle was high, drove it, mile down the road battery warning light came on, turned it off, then on, it was ok, carried on, the wipers didnt work and the light got stuck on main beam, another couple of miles and the battery light was on again and it felt down on power, then we started to loose the power steering pulled up at his house, there was no power steering at all and idle was really high. Turned the car off, then it wouldn't start, instead, you turn the key and it was making a ticking sound and flashing the reverse lights and interior lights. left it for a couple of hours, and it started, it was running fast again and none of the lights worked, turned it off and it ticked and flashed the lights! We got a lift home and will trailer the car home later today, any ideas? I think ECU and my mate reckons don't rule out bad earth? The battery is good and the aux belt is fine either way I'm sick of the sight of it!! bring back the days of mechanical diesels! :nut:
