  1. Are there any adjustments that can be made to the caster on an MB?

The steering wont recenter itself after turning, and the steering is pretty much non existant above 50mph:undecided:

The toe and camber are both ok. im not too sure what reference points to use to check the caster, but experience on modern vehicles tends to point to a caster problem

  2. cheers, found a bolt and plugged the hole, no more air leak :)

Got another small problem though, which i think may be carb related...

Took the jeep out today for the first proper drive since getting her (to the MOT testing station, passed first time :D )

Sometimes, maybe one in five times, as i take my foot off the accelerator and come to a stop the engine will cut out. It restarts as soon as i press the starter button.

i've played around with the idle screw to try and remedy this, but not alot seems to happen.

i've never really played with Carbeuratas(sp?) so im not to sure of the best way to fix it

  3. ive been hunting down an air leak on my jeep, and traced it to this hole on the carb (red arrow)

its a threaded hole, but not got a clue what it should attatch to, or if there should be a blanking plug there?

i had a flick through the maintenance manual, but it wasnt much help

    any thoughts?

  4. I removed the timing hole cover on my MB to set up the ignition timing, and found this spring wedged in there...

Everything seems to work normally, and i cant see anywhere obvious where it should have gone. Anyone recognise it? or is it just a bit of junk thats somehow got caught in there?

  5. evening all

My MB is just about ready for an MOT and UK registration, and i was wondering what the deal with MVT verification is?

i went to my local DVLA and spoke to them about registering it and what documents i need, and they never mentioned a verification certificate. I then rung the DVLA helpline to double check and still no mention of a certificate.

Do i really need someone to come out and inspect the vehicle? or can i still register it without?

  6. Apologies if this has been brought up dozens of times before (which I suspect it probably has been!)

Who do people use to insure their classic vehicles? I've been quoted £300 by Adrian flux for my '43 willys jeep, which seems a lot to me.

    Any other recommendations?

  7. So, the restoration project has thrown up another spanner in the works:undecided:

intermittantly, it gets stuck in 2nd gear and i cant move the gearstick back to neutral. Eventually, with alot if wiggling, it will come back out and drive fine until it sticks again.

im going to pop the gearbox out next weekend and strip it down. I've heard this is a fairly common problem with MB's, so anyone got any tips/advice?

    cheers,

    Rich

  8. Cheers guys. I've disconnected the arm and rocked the steering wheel, the play is defiantly in the gear. I managed to get the steering wheel off last night, so ill hopefully tackle getting the rest out tonight.

The jeep had massive off road wheels and tyres fitted for the last god knows how many years, so I'm thinking that they might have caused extra wear inside the gear

  9. my MB has a turn switch on the front hubs, so i can select 'lock' or 'unlock'. I've looked in the shop manual, and they are listed in the accessories section as 'declutching front hubs'.

What do they do? and how should they be used?

The switch turns easily, but nothing seems to happen.

I'll probably switch them out for standard hubs at some point, but just interested to know a bit more about them

  10. Hi all.

i have bought a jeep for restoration, and the only major fault i can find with it is that i cant disengage the front axle drive. The gearstick wont budge at all.

Has anyone had any experience with this fault? got any ideas/solutions?

I've never driven a willys before, so i might not even be doing it right! is there a trick to it?

im a mechanic by trade, so its no problem to remove the gearbox if needed, but i dont really want to if it can be avoided :)

  11. hi!

Ive just bought a 1944 ford GPW jeep to restore, and was recommended to come here! :)

My names Rich, im 28 and from Hampshire. Im an auto electricial and mechanic by trade, and have always loved classic cars. i also reenact ww2 US, so thought i'd combine the 2 hobbies by getting a jeep.
