  1. Thanks Mike I feel the RL is the one that I really want although I do like the look of the K9, its a very valid comment re the parts as I am on a tight budget so cant afford to buy something that I am going to struggle with for parts. The storage is sorted I just have to find an RL I can afford
  2. Thanks PM sent I do wonder how to value one?
  3. winchman It would be rude not to
  4. Thanks Arnt the pre 1960 RLs a lower rating so you can drive on a car licence? So if I had a newer one I would have to down plate it? If so how hard and how much?
  5. Thanks Sean Having mooched around the net for hours I still like the RL and K9. I do like the modern Bedford MK/MJ but just well out of my budget. I do like Unimogs but to be honest my hearts now set on an RL, but I would settle for a K9 but its all down to finding one with such a small budget. It was interesting to see the few on Ebay, The lovely red crash tender thingy didn't even reach £1300 so didn't sell as it had a reserve. The RL recovery truck looked nice but hasn't sold at £3000 I did call two at the weekend, a very nice canvas backed one but it was £6000! and a radio bodied one that needed a clutch that went for £1100, so they are about. I like the RB44 but felt it was too new. In the mean time I am clearing the loft and garage to raise a bit more cash for the pot and restoring my old 70s motorbike. I have to be patient I know but I have had so many friends offer me support and shown an interest I want one now so I can show it at Easter/ summer.
  6. Just wondering if anyone local to me could show me around an RL or K9, then if I ever find one I would have some idea what to look for?
  7. Thanks Richard. One I have looked at when you look from the rear the brake drums stick out past the single wheel fitted? The body is missing so I have no idea what it was, is this correct so should it have twin wheels?
  8. Why do some RLs have twin rears and some don't? Could I use a twin wheeler with single wheels at the back? How much are tyres? If I bought a twin wheeler with only singles at the back how hard is it to find two more wheels?
  9. If I cant find an RL what else should I consider? Truck size, 4x4, Whats the Austin K9 like? any others I should start to look for?
  10. What I should have said is its easy if you know how to do it but a lot of work. I built a trailer in the summer and it was surprising two of us in a fully equipped workshop and it still took us two days just to fabricate it. Its all down to what skills you have or if you have the money to pay some one. Being an engineer I have the skills but have to rely on a friends workshop for stuff I cant do on the drive, but he is fully equipped and a very good engineer so I am lucky
  11. Thanks I had seen these, I really wanted a box type or flat bed, the big problem with those two is they are miles away so transport would be expensive and take me out of my small budget
  12. Having re read the posts, I feel it would be quite easy to fabricate one. If you could weld and have the space its possibly cheaper to buy a chop saw and welder and make one. Its when you start having to pay for professional services it gets costly. If you have a local vehicle body builder near by it might be worth asking if one of the lads could make it as a foreigner as it would be cheaper. Some people don't like new and insist everything must be original but its down to availability and cost, often you put that much new metal in to a structure it would have been better to build a new one.
  13. No problem, if we all help each other life can be so much easier and fun. I had a good root around whilst there, I have my eye on a 50s winch he has had for years so we chat about it when we meet, I think he will sell it to me if I can find an RL. It was worth while as he gave me some good ideas for a removable box that can come off with no fork lift or Hiab, all I need now is an RL that's on budget and not too far away.
  14. Well been to said location and it was sold to two blokes from Tarleton and to be honest I am not sure if it turned out to be a QL or an RL
  15. Hello Pete I am new here too, just looking for my first MV
  16. Only the other day whilst chatting to my local storage chap he gave me a hot tip re the location of a QL, I will follow it up and let you know
  17. Thanks just never had a cab over before, once had a Land rover with no heater and that was grim.
  18. Whilst asking around for a body for the RL I am hoping to buy I have had a tip of about a QL hidden away. I am told its complete with a box type body on the back. I will investigate over the weekend so if you need anything let me know.
  19. A little update We have a local LPG fitter who has helped me out in the past, I don't like to mither him but I called today. The number one thing is it has to go on the register and have a cert issued cost about £130. The rest he tells me is easy. The bit that goes on the carb is critical as it must be the correct size, so he recommends we buy a new one, the rest can be used. I will keep you informed. I will do a blog of how we did it assuming the truck deal comes off.
  20. Well that's ideal all I need now is a Nissen hut some land to put it on oh and a vehicle to put in it.
  21. Well the Bedford vendor hasn't been in touch, I am hoping he is just busy as I was very keen. I have some outside storage sorted but I would like to keep it inside. Its typical, sorted storage, sorted insurance and gas conversion and now I cant find a truck!
  22. The plan well whats left of it I would like an RL or similar. If I had the finances I would have a box body I could lift off so it could be a camper or flat bed, but at the moment I am struggling to find either.
