  1. thanks for the links and info... it is all about HGVs in the hours of darkness. Found out that the same happened to a friend with his 7.5t. But since then despite parking in the same place with no lights he has not received any further fixed penalty. Looks like if this particular police officer happens to pass a vehicle commiting this hideous offence then he/she issues tickets, but hopefully will not return every night. Anyway, I was going to then move the MK to it's off road storage and the cold start blew the starting motor. So I've got bigger fish to fry now.... thanks cops.
  2. Last night a policeman ticketed my MK (in front of my house) for having being parked without marker lights (offence code 375). I've looked at all the liht configurations and I cannot find anything that could be 'marker lights' or parking lights. I'm assuming that the side lights arent parking lights as these would, I guess, kill the batter over night?? I'm hoping the vehicle isn't fitted with parking lights and therefore I can't be legally required to use them??? Has anyone experienced this problem? The fixed penalty is only £30 but the long term problem is that I cannot park on the road anywhere again other wise the police can issue a ticket every night! Any help greatly appreciated... Paddy.
  3. An auto spark friend tested all the circuits and located the power drain in the starter motor. I've taken this off (picture attached) and had it bench tested, it's working perfectly normally. but, when I looked at the wiring I noticed that the little round socket plug (picture attacted) has loose wires. (the wires are attached to the back of the socket and this plugs into the starter). these wires are or were being held in to the socket with sillicone sealant, a bodge. do you know anyone who could re-connect these wires? I'm in manchester, or have a wiring diagram? is there something missing from this socket plug and that is why sillicone has been used? One other question. look at the photo of the starter. there's two terminals at the very end of the starter on the round face. when I disconnected the started all the wiring, including the earth strap was on the left had terminal. there was nothing on the right hand one. but as you can see there is a snipped off bit of bared copper wire on there so it was connected to something at one point. What is this terminal for? any reason why there was nothing connected to it? NB although I got this MJ straight from Whithams, I did have a this replacement starter put on by a civvy garage and the sillicone bodge is theirs, not witham's nor the MOD's. any help, advice, contacts greatfully received as I have only one week to get this vehicle back on the road....paddy wagon.
  4. aaargh, it's an MJ not MK, anyway... if I turn the ignition one click, it drains the power instantly...the volt metre can't keep up withthe numbers dropping. if i turn it all the way it starts and the alternator holds it around 24v, but if i put on any electrics, fan, wipers, it falls down to 22v. if i stop the engine at this point then there's not enough power to restart. I something is draining the power...how do i find it? is there a common faullt that i could check first? any suggestions greatly received, paddy wagon.
  5. lol, the power of knowledge sharing. shortly after posting this i got a PM straight to my private email inbox and at that point knew there had to be a setting somewhere i hadn't spotted......thanks.
  6. sorry if this has been asked before but, is it possible to be notified by email if someone has sent you a PM or there has been a post to a thread that you are involved with? it would really speed up the exchange of info and discussion... just wondering, wouldn't know how to do it myself, so ain't complainin neither......paddy wagon..
  7. protruck services in lincoln (?) and recommended by someone on this forum, have quoted £750 for a underrun and side bar protection kit, gettin that to manchester or fitting not included. i'm sure that the standard kits are cheaper but clive says they sometimes need adjustments, ie, the spare wheel needs moving a bit to make space, and the towhitch at the back can be impeded by a standard kit, these ones are made specifically for an MJ.... does anyone know if standard kits can have these problems or if this price is reasonable?
  8. hi, my names Paddy and i'm a proud owner of an MJ and just about to get it an MOT and first registration.. it's all a bit of a roller coaster and very steep learning curve but what a joy. first rode in these trucks as an army cadet and then as an infantry squaddie. never got to drive them though so there's a whole new story unfolding. just hope i can look after it.......
  9. i'm trying right now to get one prepared for MOT and will go down the path of private HGV. does anyone know the spec of the side and rear under run bars? i need to give my garage some pointers. if you know the phone number of a garage that has already done this work on a MJ that would be really helpful. i'm in manchester but hopefully i can get the two garages to talk to each other. cheers, paddy wagon.
  10. does anyone know how i find out the wieight limit/capacity of the the 'roofrack' on the cab of the MJ??? the primary use for the structure is for mounting a weapon/observation and the weight of the person is supported inside the cab but the checker plate (non slip surface?) on there suggests that it's expected that personnel will get up there from time to time. if so does that mean that the structure has been tested and a weight limit calculated? i'm buyin an MJ and expect to use the cab roof as a performance/dance platform. it seems solid and i wouln't hesitate to get up there but if a magic number exists it would be soooo good to know it. thanks to anyone who can help, paddy wagon.
