  1. first chassis was cut in half to run a sawmill on a farm in the late thirties. the full chassis came from a farm in the south island. a pallet load of spare bits and pieces came with the first one. no gearbox though or gatechange.
  2. thanks for that doug, you would of thought one finger typing was idiot proof!- the engine plate does have 40 h/p on it, i'll try and post a few pictures if that helps, i have been told that leylands from this period were quiet common in aus and nz, i'll be in touch rob. thanks mike.
  3. hi redherring, i have the front half of a large leyland and a rolling chassis of the same model as well, the engine tag has engine no 601 19 8 24 and engine type S6B, on the top of the front crossmember is 45323 8092 there are no visible letters in front of these numbers and i thought this was a 5 ton size leyland, the rear wheels are 850 diam and 15 inches wide but there is no rubber on them, i was wondering if the leyland for sale was mechanically the same? as i have no gearbox or gatechange controls and the large wheel in the diff on my full length chassis has been robbed, any advice would be appreciated, thanks mike.
  4. hi all, doug is correct the diff is of a vulcan, as i have a diff out of one here, i bought it thinking it could be out of an albion as the Y spoke shape is very similar, it was identified for me by one of tim and steves contacts, i know of one other here in nz but it sold before i got a chance to see it, i think a leyland with a workshop body would definately be a unique and interesting project vehicle, mike.
  5. thanks for the welcomes guys, and tim yes i think the word brave or something along those lines definately covers my obsession with old trucks, when i work out how to attach some pictures i hope you guys will still talk to me! mike.:nut:
  6. hi all, well i thought it was about time i joined as i've been visiting this site for about a year or so to watch the dennis restoration and other early truck projects, i am mainly interested in trucks of the twenties and ww1 era, and have about 1/2 a dozen or so, some complete and some maybe possible projects, owning a sandblasting bussiness has worked against me as rusting hulks of steel that were once trucks does not scare me, but probably should, i live in the north island of new zealand, Taupo, and at present i'm restoring a 1929 Dennis 30cwt and a 1925 studebaker pick up, i also have a 1923 pierce arrow 2 ton and a 1925 A1 thornycroft which i am hoping to restore, 2 other possible projects i hope to oneday restore are a WD 1918 thornycroft and a very early white 3 ton truck, and recently i've found 1 full chassis and 3 cut front halfs of a mid twenties albion 2 1/2 ton truck, all with most mechanicals, so hopefully a project one day, i have 2 daughters and my other interests are deer hunting and firearms, i think this is where the military side appeals to me as i have allways had a fascination with the history of ww1 and ww2, and one day hope to restore the J type thornycroft back to its original WD configuration, well thats whats going to happen if i live to 120 yrs old, cheers mike.
