Enigma

This morning I attended the unveiling of a information panel near the crashsite of the Lancaster. In attendance was a family member of Loughborough, and representatives from Canada and Australia. Also Gijs who was involved from the beginning and those who are busy to get more of these panels for other crews in the area. More people attended ofcourse but my memory isn't very good so sorry I can't mention everyone. A coincidence was that 2 young people passing by on bicycles stopped and turned out to be Australian tourists who stayed for the unveiling. The weather was lovely with sunshine and it was nice and warm. Afterwards we went to the nearby visitors centre "De Grote Rivieren" for drinks. All in all a good morning and goes to show people remember those who fought (and often died) for our freedom. LEST WE FORGET!

To be honest, to most people anything with tracks and a turret with gun or canon is a tank. At first glance it may be a bit difficult to tell the difference between a IFV or a tank. Com to think about it, what is a Merkava? Called a tank but IIRC it also has a ramp for infantry men?

MV's for sure, but others would be cool to see too.

You could also try a brass brush to remove the rust on the inside. The remaining rust also gives it patina and age to it.

IIRC only 1942 para shells were dated. Later in the war no dates or brands. They resumed dating on the shell in the 1950's. I am convinced your steel shell is WW2. Never seen pics of those markings in the ring, interesting. I wouldn't overpaint or strip the steel shell. Who knows what it turns out to be. Keep in mind WW2 parahelmets were used long after the war.

From what I gathered they may have followed the mine clearing tank? It might have broken down after which the vehicles passed it and drove on mines? But ofcourse, good and reliable info is hard to obtain.
