  1. 633 Squadron is full of incorrect vehicles, when 2 officers are watching the aircrews training they are standing next to a Series 1 Land Rover, There is a scene where some top brass arrive at the guard room and a Mini drives past the entrance to the airfield, The tractor pulling the bomb trailers is a 1950s Fordson Major and there is a Land Rover safari in the background. This film has so many cock-ups in it, e.g a pilot that was killed in a training accident is sitting in the front row at the mission briefing, if I watch it now I am on a constant look out for more errors.
  2. Back in the 1970s I worked as a mobile tyre fitter repairing punctures on farms I always carried a cylinder of nitrogen as a standby in case the compressor wouldn't start. So there is nothing new in using nitrogen to inflate tyres! This is just another way to make money, like charging for a new tubeless valve, even though the tyres are tubed. p.s. none of the farmers reported cooler tyres or better economy.
  3. Zoot alors or something like that, does this mean the poor sods will be driving around in poodles?
  4. Has anyone else noticed that almost all the new British Army vehicles are named after breeds of dogs, e.g. Mastiff, Ridgeback, Husky, Springer, St Bernard etc? Does anyone know why or have any good suggestions for dog breed names for older MVs?
  5. Although I know the owner of the minature Matadors I have not had a good look at them as they are at the back of a packed shed, after looking up Sandy Fraser, the builder of these vehicles it seems that both axles were centre pivoted therefore I assume they both steered.
  6. If you buy the latest edition (november 2010) of 'Military Times' there is an article in there about air raid shelters and a reproduction of the Civil Defence helmet regognition chart, it is rather surprising how many different styles & colours there were. According to this chart SP means Stretcher Party.
  7. They have some unusual vehicles in the storage area including a prototype S.P.G based on a Centurion with the gun in a fixed structure facing backwards over the engine deck, when you go to visit have a chat with Bob and he may take you round yhe storage area if he is not too busy (I had a tour a couple of years ago). They also have a collection of Conquerors including ARVs. Definitely worth avisit. Please remember that this museum is not open Fridays or Saturdays unless there is a special event on.
  8. Yes they were sold on again, I know the current owner who has both of them. They wre built by Alexander Fraser of AFcars/Lion Omnibuses who also built minature buses. The engines are BMC mini nounted longways with the drive shafts driving Vauxhall Viva axles. they are most definitely NOT for sale
  9. The MVT (Miliary Vehicle Trust) quailfys as a re-enactment group, if you are not a member I suggest you check out their website at www.mvt.org for membership details.
  10. My old Munga had Michelin 205 x 16 tyres fitted same as old Range Rovers they fitted fine didn't rub on anything & didn't look "bulgy"
  11. If you go on the DVLA website you can download a form V355/1 "Notes about taxation classes" section 8.5 is rather interesting it states;'Road Rollers, There are no restrictions on the construction of a road roller or in the circumstances under which it is used' If you take this literally then you can register anything as a 'Road Roller' and be tax & MOT exempt, the only drawback is that you would need class G (road roller) on your licence
  12. I'm not sure if it is the same one, I will ask the owner at the MVT meeting tomorrow.
  13. There is another Dorchester in Wiltshire, it was pulled out of a Quarry about 5 years ago. I can't give out the current location as it is part of a private collection & definitley not for sale. Anyone who knows wiltshire collectors will know who owns it.

I used to see these flying over the North Yorkshire Moors, it was rather strange driving along the moor top and looking over at an aeroplane flying along the valley below. I understand that thw wings and engines can be fitted to either side and they can fly with 1 engine & 1 wing missing!
  15. My brother was involved in trialling the Leyland Dafs at Catterick in 1991 for some obscure reason his was painted blue! They were given insstructions to try and break them but failed. they were followed by a Bedford MJ with winch to act as a recovery vehicle, this was not needed and in fact the Bedford got stuck itself when going back to camp for essential supplies (tea) and was pulled out by one of the Leyland Dafs!
  16. In reply to Big Als question, yes a Leyland Daf can be down rated to 7.5 tonnes GVW, Withams have the weight wrong on their website they actually weigh 5.2 tonnes, I have just had my Leyland Daf down rated & now have a comms body on it. P.M. me and I will give you more info
  17. The sidecar outfits behind the empty sidecar are Vickers Matchless, these are 1000cc V twin engined with a 3 speed gearbox, the vickers machine gun can be seen mounted on the front of the sidecar and can be de-mounted and fitted to a tripod carried on the sidecar. there is also a third seat behind the rider, but the passenger has to sit side saddle with his feet in the sidecar as thare is a spare wheel fastened on the right hand side of the motorbike. I have some good 'photos on the only surviving one of these and will try to post them tonight.
  18. If you think those figures are low try a Holt 75 gun tractor, according to Ron Harris who owns one the fuel comsumption is 100 YARDS to the gallon towing a load and 140 YARDS to the gallon empty, which is why he converted his to run on parrafin. I estimate the fuel tank holds around 50 gallons giving a range of 4 miles. How did they keep up with fuel supplies?
  19. I have just got a quote for £103.95 quite a saving!
  20. Please take note; when insuring your military vehicle do not tell the broker that you sleep in your vehicle or they will insist you insure it as a 'Motor Home' I was quoted nearly £400.00 to insure a Leyland Daf 4 tonner. (must be my age, I'm only 54 with 35 years no claims)
  21. To be held on Saturday 18/9/2010 at Keevil airfield off A350 between Trowbridge & Melksham, from 12:00 Hurricane flypast & full size replica Spitfire. WW2 vehicles preferred but any military vehicles welcome. for more info e-mail westwiltsmvt@yahoo.co.uk
  22. Hello Richard, You could try contacting Chris Orchard (of British Army Motorcycles fame) he built a replica Welbike a few years ago, and he lives in Wiltshire which isnt that far from youself. regards John
  23. There is one painted white with the words "MIND OUT" painted on it at the entrance to a house on the A36 south of west wellow. Changing tack slightly I know of 2 WW1 naval shells on plinths at the road side, 1 is in Middleton near Pickering on the A170, the other is a bit more hidden away outside the village hall at Kirby Misperton. Does anyone know of any others?
