  1. Kevin, I'm happy to hear you were able to successfully follow up on my leads and made good use of my reconnaissance work over in France.

Yes, it is rusty but it is rare and it is very complete down to two instruction plates and gun clamps inside the cab. Here are some photos I made during my recce trip.

    Good luck with the restoration!

Dear all, as some of you may be aware, the author of this blog, my brother Tomo, has sadly passed away.

This leaves us with a dilemma, we would love to continue with the restoration, but unfortunately none of us have the time, knowledge or dedication that Tomo displayed to achieve the fantastic results so far.

Our best option would be to find a buyer, who would be able to take over, and once complete, would hopefully use the vehicle in WW1 display and re-enactment as Tomo had planned to do.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Here's hoping you can find a good home for the Thornycroft J type and make Tomo's dream come true.

    2) following that, does anybody know where there is one??

In the early 1980s I played with one they had at the Sea Cadet Corps in Potters Bar. Who knows it may still be there?

It was a single gun mount and it looked like this:

  4. Hello all,

I recently bought a 10-cwt mortar trailer in Belgium. Obviously, the original wood is long gone. The chassis is still pretty good, except for the tow bar which was replaced a long time ago with one made from round pipe to fit a civilian hitch.

Does anyone have the parts for the tow bar - towing eye, brake lever and parts - and possibly a cut-off tow bar? Or dimensions so I can make up the tow bar?

I realise I need more parts but I'd thought I'd start with the hardest bits 😉 Any leads to 10-cwt mortar trailer parts are appreciated.

I live in the Netherlands. Thanks in advance!

  5. Here's a nice period photo of the 8'0'' wheelbase Commer Q2 Tractor.

There are only a few survivors, one in a stunning RAF blue-black paint scheme, the other is a wreck and will hopefully restored one day. There may be more, but I can't see there would be more than a handful?

Thank-you. I defer to James Gosling on these matters, but we are aiming for a truck in 1944 NW Europe markings and I believe they'd be green in British Army.  James or Hanno might be able to confirm with a period reference.

1944 NW Europe markings is a different subject from the base colour on a vehicle built in 1943. Refer to the research done by Mike Starmer: "1942-44: Vehicles continued to be delivered and used in plain S.C.C.2 following ACI 1160 which gave S.C.C.2 as “Basic Paint”. even after the introduction of S.C.C.15 Olive Drab in 1944, vehicles were not to be repainted in the new basic paint / base colour unless absolutely necessary, e.g. after a rebuild.

Mind you, I think any owner can paint his/her vehicle in any colour they like. I'm just trying to get the facts right. Did you or James find any original paint layers?

but as this was ex-British Army, and a British contract, it definitely needed to stay green.

What is the reason you say that a British contract CMP was painted green? Do you have a contemporary reference? Just trying to learn as as far as I know in 1943 SCC2 was the dominant base colour.

    Great project, by the way!
