  1. Interesting that SNL G513 lists two different fifth wheels for these tractors, by Fruehauf and Dayton, the dayton type looks different to the one you have, with the fore and aft pivots on the chassis and no transverse pivot. The Fruehauf type has a one piece trailer lead on ramp which was always missing on this truck, so could have been a retrofit by the French but I have seen many Federals, Autocars and the like with the same Fruehauf style. The Dayton style has two separate ramps FMT16C734 and FMT16C735 but the SNL picture doesn't show them curiously2
  2. It's only when you start working on these bigger trucks that you find out how heavy everything is. I had a puncture on an inner rear tyre on a road run and thought I'd better change it to avoid damaging a nearly new tyre. After jacking up, undoing 10 outer wheel nuts, 10 inner nuts, heaving the spare off and bolting everything together I didn't have enough strength left to get the flat back onto the carrier and had to leave it at the roadside to pick up later. Best not to go it alone haha
  3. Your hard work on the springs will pay off with a better ride the back end was always a bit stiff especially without a trailer Seeing your progress makes me wish I'd kept the Federal apart from the cab tinware which I think will repair fairly easily its in pretty good condition. I wonder if the rear tyres are the new ones I put on in 1993 I always remember one was an odd one with a central groove seems to be still there Word of warning be careful if you do change tyres I had a locking ring blow out on one, gave me a fright I had borrowed a proper cage from a local tyre depot, who hardly ever used it nearly all trucks had well base tubeless rims even then
  4. Great to see this truck getting the attention it deserves I owned it from 93 to 03 did 700 miles on d day 50th without a hitch the Bedford 466 is a good engine does 15mpg solo and 12mpg with a trailer and pulls like a train don't bother with the Hercules. Bloody noisy though. I believe you can get modern hub oil seals to fit the brakes were always good even with oily linings. The only problem was terrible wheel shimmy which I cured with temporary spring wedges to reduce the castor angle they seem to have disappeared unless I missed them. Keep up the work it's a great truck to drive the Clark gearbox is a peach to shift
  5. Nice to see my old bolster truck up and running I owned her before Hugh Oliver and after Geoff Maskell who originally imported her. A lovely truck I should have kept.. I replaced all the wheel cylinders , master cylinder and flexies. Everything but the hydrovac ( ouch !) The number on the hood sides if you can make it out was correct for this truck confirmed by no other than Bart Vanderveen . Just before I sold the truck I found that Featherlight have a wing in their standard range of the correct width and radius they are too long but could easily shorten, its intended for 18 x22.5 super single tyres. The trailer is post war but similar to wartime ones except for wheels and track width I had a stripped timing gear disaster on the M25 the engine now has a metal cam gear one less thing to worry about A sweet engine as you say and the nicest GMC gearbox I've ever shifted drives like new. Lovely motor.
