  1. Just about to start marking out bonnet up but tbh am a little confused about the actual sizing on the RAF type identification roundels painted on the British bonnets /cabs around 1942. I've had a good trawl of the Internet and of period photos and there doesn't seem to be much conformity. I have found one site that quotes it's a 31" roundel, 6" yellow, 10" blue, 10" white and 5" red...but even the old period photos differ greatly. Was it just a case of painting the roundel as large as you could? Widths of the colour bands to suit? Does anyone who's painted on have some good diameters to go from?
  2. Still so many adverts on my phone screen...the amount of times now that I have hit one accidently whilst trying to scroll...hmmm
  3. I have installed an Adblocker and unfortunately it isn't working. I view the site mainly on the go on my phone yet now 3/4 of my screen is taken up with ads so I can't view and as soon as I start to scroll more pop ups appear.... I've gone from checking out content a couple times an hour to now once or twice a day....not good.
  4. Yes, it's now moving to a larger site near Keevil Airfield.

    Adverts !

Totally understand funding but this is just over the top at the moment. I'm using it on my mobile and they're filling the screen!
  6. Same here...adverts top and bottom popping up and even when minimised another one pops up as soon as I start scrolling..!?!?!
  7. Anyone else attending the White Horse Military Show on the 19th / 20th August? Only started last year and this year at a larger site near Keevil Airfield in Wiltshire.
  8. Now that's a show we'd loved to have taken our truck to. The Austin 7 is from that part of the world, I recall an interesting chat with its owner at the Castletown D Day centre open day event down in Weymouth a couple months back.
  9. I think I'd agree with that. There's a certain amount of satisfaction doing a job and seeing the results, tackling a problem and getting over it.
  10. The Commer is actually our second full restoration, the first being a civilian 1950 Commer....we do have a few cars dotted around too.... So, yes....it is very addictive isn't it.. To be honest, we are already missing doing the big jobs, so much of the pleasure is in the restoration isn't it?
  11. So, we're not far from finishing our current project, our 1942 Commer Q2 that has its own restoration blog on the forum... It's been difficult and challenging at times but the result has really been good and we've really enjoyed the restoration. My Father is retired and he's been a key help in this and that's made it more worthwhile. So, we were down the yard today chatting whilst finishing some jobs and the subject came onto 'what next?'...sit on our laurels or go again...??? The answer, we'd like to take on another project...of course it will need to be a Commer and wartime at that and therefore that hugely restricts the chances but Commers are our thing so we're putting our feelers out now. If anyone has any leads, even just an old story we could maybe follow up, then please drop us a message. I have one or two leads but they aren't proving easy....
  12. Thank you, that would make sense.
  13. I know this is a can of worms and I don't confess to knowing much about this but.... On our Commer we have fitted some temporary magnetics as we still have another coat of paint to add to the cab. We are now planning it's correct numbering and I am led to believe that the 505 on the AoS magnetic does not represent 505th Co RASC? It should be a number in the 70s? Any advice chaps?
  14. We affiliate with a local Somerset LI group, my Son's uniform is badged up as a Infantryman of the Somerset Light Infantry as part of the 43rd Wessex Division. My uniform is badged up as RASC with the 43rd Wessex but I have chosen to wear Sergeant straps as my Grandfather's rank was in the RASC during the war. I am the only member badged as RASC within our group and we do have Officers above us who we take instruction from.
  15. It's taken a long time, over a year, to get the canvas. The colour was something very important to me and I've had colour matches before we went ahead with anything. We do have an issue with it...the rear end has been supplied not to what we ordered. But the suppliers are having it back at the end of the show season to fix it.
  16. On the Sunday of the show we were asked if we would like to take part in the full scale skirmish, Westonzoyland being a wartime airbase still has many features such as pillboxes...it makes for a good battle taking on a bunker or a pillbox. We attended a very good professional briefing on the Sunday morning, everything was covered and thought through. Our job, carry a troop of 4th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry into battle, this was so good. Being part of it all and the attraction a British truck with British troops in got.
  17. So chaps, we did get her finished to a state where she could get to the show. But even on the Friday morning we were still doing jobs, the main one was fitting a new passenger door glass!! Anyway, we planned a route that had the least hills and junctions just to be careful as it was her first time on the road, it made it around 15 miles. She performed well at a steady low speed, we stopped twice to check her temperature and let her cool only to find that she was handling it better than expected. We got her there and the feeling of relief and pure bloody happiness between us was brilliant, I drove her down with my 11 year old as co-pilot and my Dad who's helped out so much in the restoration following behind in his trusty Land Rover for if anything went wrong. I have lots of pictures so am sorting through some to post.
  18. We've been spending every spare hour we can down the shed trying to get her as close to finished as possible, will be down there again tonight after work. We will be driving her the 10 miles to the show tomorrow evening after rush hour...if she's finished..fingers crossed. We are taking her to Westonzoyland so the plan is to get plenty of good photos either the ww2 pillboxes etc as the backdrop.
  19. After 3 years of restoration....she finally made her way out onto the road.. Only a gentle loop round the quiet back lanes of the village though. Some teething issues...mainly under engine duress we've found a hole in the exhaust that's effecting her running. We got her back in the yard and just to prove a point I taped the hole and with hard throttle she ran much better. We have a show at the weekend, I will use some putty temporarily and then drop the exhaust afterwards so that I can weld a repair. First time out the shed painted and in the sunshine she looked very good, well pleased with what we've done.
  20. Well....she's finally painted...and the new canvas is fitted.... Only a couple of minor jobs left to do and she should be attending her first show in a couple weeks... The plan is to take her out and road test her this coming weekend so when she's out the shed I will take some photos and let you guys see what you think...
  21. The paint was delivered last week so she's now in the process of being hand painted.... I won't post pictures during painting...just when she's finished now. We have a show, Warag at Westonzoyland on the last weekend in May. That's our aim, to get her there. She won't be finished, I simply don't think we have time to get things like her insignia painted. But already, with most of the body painted I can tell you she's looking pretty damm good..
