  2. ps i am using a double plated clutch with the origanal clutch brake
  3. no need for the airhorns pasangers screems were louder :rofl: the first one i did had a retaining nut, like on an angle grinder only biggerthat held the shaft in the bearing.the second (newer type) has a circlip and spacer taking the place of the nut. the gear already had a circlip in it, i found that nearly all the gears from the box would fit the shaft as all the same splines ,so giving you a range of diamiters for the prop flange to fit :-D
  4. hi all do any of you know the full itinerary of the recovery gear for the scammell explorer :-D .
  5. does any one now the full itinerary of recovery gear the scammell should carry :-D

  13. ps i left in 2 of the studs on the gearboxend to act as location dowles when assembling.
  14. i have now recived the bearing i needed from chrisg many thanks.as a result of this i can now show you how i sorted out the coupling between engine and gearbox. rolls eagle 265 twin plated pull clutch ,it had an eton gearbox. i cut down through the gearbox half an inch from the face that bolts to the bell housing. this left me with the clutch shaft bellhousing and the bearing needed to suport it and a bearing housing. i then dismantaled it all.the studs that held the bellhousing to the gearbox ,i removed then tapped the bolt holes to take the studs and drilled out the thread thus reversing the the side of bolting, this will anable me to dismantle the assembly in situ in the lorry if needed. i then had the input shaft gear tempered ,i welded the depression in the gear then faced it of and machined it to fit the prop.i then replaced the gearbox bearing with a sealed bearing as there is nolonger any oil to lube it and reasembled all the parts.:-D
  15. thank you philb ,much appreciated :-D
  16. help ! does anyone know where i can get a replacement battery for my AVOMETER model 8 ,the 15v square one , thank you:-D
  17. i have heard that some scamells have got a gearbox pressure switch that illuminates a light at low pressure,:??? do they also have a pressure gauge or is it one or the other.all my mates only have a pressure gauge.
  18. hi N.O.S i am afraid that the gearbox i have is like most things british, crude to use and maintain ,robust and leaks oil :-D. i was once told that if british and not leaking oil it has not got any oil in it.:cool2::cool2:
  19. hi, sorry i ment 14 LTRs i have helped fit a leyland TL12 , volvo FL7, cummins L10 and in one of mine a rolls 220 then swoped this for a rolls 265. we have found that small engins 9 LTRs or less have high revs this can give high speed in top gear over heating the rear bronz crown wheel and the gearbox so burning and braking down the oil thuse incresing the friction to the point of distruction.eg merc 7 LTR. i have herd of a tractor puller 500 plus HP on a scammell highwayman gearbox it never broke through-out its life the engine was a 14 LTR big cam well open up.The block of a v8 is shorter so the engine can be farther forward thus missing the steering box. the chassis is 4 inches narrower than a normal lorry and the gear box center is a bit lower
  20. i am toying with the idea of puting a scania V8 12 LTR in a explorer but having a hard job finding an engine . They all seam to go for export. I am sure it will fit and i have not heard of one being done. with the chassis in such a bear state now is the time to decide what engine to fit. can any one help
  21. hurray it works, but it is a bit intermittent not sure if im getting a true reading, i think the flywheel sensor is dodgy:)
