  1. Spares, larger parts are hard to find. The transfer box doesn’t tolerate abuse or high horse power engine conversions and are now becoming difficult or expensive to replace. Recently a boxed gearbox and transfer box was snapped up for £2500. I heard one changed hands for £3600. body work is straight forward and can be easily diy’ed with the exception of the front mudguards which are radiused in both directions. I was quoted £500 +vat each. tyres, original bar grips are now hard to find in usable condition. Modern equivalents are available and can be sourced second hand at acceptable prices. New they’re north of £500 each. I'm sure others will add their comments.
  2. Hi Grafter6 think of everything as big, to jack up the Explorer, total 12 tons so a big jack. The wheels weight approx 90 kgs. Try to keep then standing up, easier to move and very heavy to pick up if laid down. Storage if inside, the doorway has to be 11ft high. Spanner’s, bsf/whitworth and again big. you get the gist.

  8. Hello All. can anyone advise where I can get 2 off Autolite 2327 waterproof spark plugs or the equivalent by another manufacturer. They are to fit an Onan generator. I've tried the Green spark plug company who inform me they don't have any. Thanks in advance for any help.
  9. Is the textured surface like the dashboard on a mgb. The paint is called "crinkle paint" and is available from the mg owners club amongst other places.
  10. Thanks Richard, Potless and Bryan. the Onan 6.5Kva and 6jb has brought up some internet hits but until now none of the images has been a match for my generator. Richard's link appears to service the USA only. still looking. Dave.

  12. Thanks Richard. Based on your identication I googled "3.5kva Onan generator" and have found a post on HMVF discussing exactly the voltage and that person found a fault on the starter brushes and once rectified the generator started ok on 12v. Im going to look closer to see if I have the same issue. The previous owner has used it with 24v (2x 12volt batteries) so I may have more to fix. Dave.

  15. Thank you both for your replies. Very encouraging. pc1959, I've seen videos of the SDI Rover but nothing about the build. John, good detailed information. I admit the websites for the ecu's are a little confusing and I need to continue to research that. Interesting you appear to use 2 injectors for each cylinder, I assume to get sufficient capacity. I hadn't considered that. I assume your triggering 2 from the same ecu output. the Explorer currently has a Leyland 680 and it works well. However I also have a complete Meadows in the garden shed which was an insurance against the previously discussed possibility of loosing historic tax status if major changes had been made to a lorry. my intention was/is to get the Meadows running on a test rig and then decide wether to change the Leyland over. regarding your offer to see the discombobulater and complete engine, I'd like to take you up on that next time your visiting the barn.   16. Thank you John. this has motivated my thinking. The Meadows has 2 identical heads with 3 individual ports for inlet per head. So indirect injection through injectors in each inlet tract. Each inlet connected to an inlet plenum with single throttle valve. so now to the first questions, crank position sensing, pick up off flywheel? injectors, required capacity, is there a 10 litre petrol engine already with fuel injection ? the above is just me thinking out loud but if anyone has already investigated this I'd be interested in piggybacking off your knowledge. picture from Explorer parts books.   17. Bravo. I imagine this has taken a lot of time to get to this stage and I guess you've also got a long way to go if I understand you're looking for improved reliability and fuel economy. one day I'd like to pick your brains on doing this to an Explorer meadows engine.
  18. The correct oil level is when it's at the top of the filler neck. The oil in the rear cover gets there from splash when the diff rotates. At about 7 o'clock below the bearing is a drain hole back to the bottom of the diff. The same level applies to the gearbox, transfer box and front axle.
  19. Original heat exchanger.mine was missing when I got her. My diff is very warn and I believe due to this generates a lot of heat. Measured after a road run at 100 degrees. This resulted in the input shaft oil seal getting cooked. Subsequently I've made a replacement pump and used an MBG oil cooler to cool the oil as it's pumped round. This keeps it all below 65 degrees. if your diff is good just monitor the casing temperature around the bearings and if cool then it'll be ok. the bearings cost hundreds of pounds !!!.
