  1. You'd have thought the regimental signals officer would have known his stuff.....or maybe not?
  2. Apologies - I'd missed the Centurion photos being added. There's an article on the last remaining Mk1 ARV here; http://anzacsteel.hobbyvista.com/Armoured%20Vehicles/anzacarvph_1.htm it saw New Zealand and then Australian service (to relase Mk2 ARV's for Vietnam service) and now in the Royal Australian Armoured Corp museum at Puckapunyal. Is the photo of the "buffed up" ARV going to be posted?
  3. Been recommended Varta J3's in place of the UK6TN/TNMF's - apparently have the same footprint. Ok, a conventional Lead Acid Battery rather than AGM but obviously cheaper than dealing with Armasafe....
  4. Following up on my earlier question..... Found this; http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33534 Not something you'd expect to find on a Bushcraft Forum! There are a couple of other photos but the links are broken. VRM is 23 FD 40 Also posted in the "Range Wrecks" thread.
  5. http://www.thinkdefence.co.uk/2010/05/ship-to-shore-logistics/ From Rhino ferry to Mexeflote etc.
  6. Not really a range wreck.......... One of 2 CET's deployed to the Falklands. Hit a mine/IED on Yorke Point adjacent to the Stanley Airfield after the cessation of hostilities.... Came across photo completely by chance on a Bushcraft forum of all places. VRM is 23FD40. Original source location http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33534
  7. On the A96/Anderson Drive in Aberdeen (in the rush hour) - 2 CVRT Scimitars/Sabres heading north (on a civilian low loader). Definitely privately owned. Only got a passing view on a roundabout............ anything happening in Northern parts this weekend involving HMV's?
  8. While researching the Ebay ad for a Centurion hull + Crane found this.... http://www.network54.com/Search/view/47209/1078773859/Centurion+AVRE+information?term=Centurion+AVRE+Information Due credit to Mr O Orsbourn.
  9. See my earlier posts............. Joris posted the Ebay ad in the Ebay "For Sale" thread....... Rgds
  10. Cheers, Since posting the question I have done a bit more research and came to the conclusion it couldn't be NCK Rapier..... If I find anymore information I'll post it under the Ebay thread....... Thanks again for the clarification.
  11. The comment - a Bargain at 30K - was firmly tongue in cheek............ Whats the going price for a Cent these days........there was a time when there seemed to be ARV's for sale just about everywhere..........? (apologies if this is going off topic)
  12. With the Lossiemouth based Tornado training squadron being disbanded its just Typhoons and the occasional F15 in the area now.... Tornado has been withdrawn from service as of the end of March..
  13. Interesting to see this photo of the Cheiftain crane and then a Centurion version appears on Ebay - a bargain at 30K!! Under the "Tracked Vehicle" grouping theres a thread on "cranes" which has the black and white photo (somewhat grainy) of the two tank cranes - cheiftain (the one posted above) and a centurion (the picture appears in the Simon Dunstan book and the more recent Haynes "manual") The Ebay cent supposedly has a telescopic boom which mean it can't be a Rapier & Ransomes crane (see the black and white photo- the R&R boom is pretty distinctive and was used on their railway recovery cranes) or can it? Ebay photo doesnt show enough of the boom - and there's only one photo.......... On a separate subject of Range Wrecks - there is an Episode of the BBC Coast programme which includes the Tain bombing range (looking at seals and not AFV's) that has a couple of Cheiftain ARRV's and at least one Cent briefly pictured (not sure if this is a recent episode given the number of repeats.....) Thought I'd mention Tain as it never seems to get mentioned when it comes to wrecks or the favourite subject of Buried/Forgotten vehicles....
  14. What was the corrosion mechanism causing the issue in the Stainless steel if there was inhibitors etc. being used. Was it microbial?
  15. Its still on Google Earth imagery from 2016 - north of the A66 just before the start of the Temple Sowerby bypass
  16. The Asbestos issue had sprung to mind - got to get it removed from my own Garage (and then dispose of it)!!!
  17. The National Archive drwg indicates the roofing material and wall cladding would have been/probably is asbestos. Mind you, from the photos the walls look to be clad in "wriggly tin" If you were to reuse you'd probably re-clad in plastic coated profile cladding or cement board.
  18. Courtesy of the National Archive website a Defence Estates guide to Hangar identification: http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/http://www.defence-estates.mod.uk/publications/technical_bulletins/2002/tb_02-02.pdf and the drawing for a "Standard" Robin Hanger http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/http://www.defence-estates.mod.uk/publications/technical_bulletins/2002/tb02_02_drawings/330-Layout1.plt.pdf
  19. Any more details? a) what sort of timeline does the farmer have for wanting it removed b) is it the "standard" size Robin Hangar (by the looks of the external photos it probably is - 60 ft across)?
  20. Its cast steel so its probably armour of some sort Given the castle references a turret? 1956 suggests it was involved in the Suez operation. Its a photo of a steel section that has been cut/machined through its thickness to show stress fractures so a gun mantlet that has been hit by an AP round?
  21. Your group's done a good job in refurbishing it - just had a look at the York Area Group website with the before and after photos. You have a Ransomes and Rapier breakdown crane as well.......
  22. Here's detail of the offending sealed beam unit FV687555 Wagner 4500 (4-7/16" OD) 25W / 26V - dual beam unit I'll have a look at the GE unit in a bit more detail - Thanks
  23. Came across this having seen various comments on another thread on identifying a Coles yard crane https://sites.google.com/site/colescranedatabase/main-database Includes a section on the military cranes supplied by Coles
  24. On the subject of Coles cranes a quick search turned up this Google Database......... https://sites.google.com/site/colescranedatabase/main-database There is a section on the military cranes supplied by Coles Looks a pretty comprehensive resource
