  1. Hi Ian,

For my part, I’m not going to use it in mine. After a bit of research, I’ve found that a lot of the ‘super’ unleaded furries are still marked E5 but a fair few of them have no ethanol at all in them so I’ve switched to using them.

This is from Esso’s website (which is what I use at the moment): https://www.esso.co.uk/en-gb/fuels/petrol The but starting that there’s no ethanol in their super unleaded is towards the bottom of the page.

    Hope that helps!

  2. Yes agreed! I registered my Sabre earlier this year. Took a little while and I ended up having to get a NOVA for it (which was super simple) but it went through fine. My understanding from lots of chats with DVLA is that width limits are being enforced for new registrations so registering 432s and your Abbot for example isn’t possible anymore due to them being 2.5m + wide. Happy to talk you through what I did and share the documents etc.

  3. So a quick update for anyone interested following a lot of help from some lovely members.
The initial registration has been rejected initially for not having a NOVA registration for the vehicle. Everything else was fine on the V55 and with the supporting documents.

I have kept a copy of how I filled out the form in case anyone else needs guidance in the future although a couple of wonderful members were kind enough to share their V5s with me which really helped!

I'm now in the process of trying to work out why it needs a NOVA as it's not imported and doesn't seem to have ever left the country except in service.
I will keep you all posted on what next...

In the meantime, have a happy and safe Christmas everyone!

  4. Good afternoon all,

I am really struggling to fill the V55/5 in and can't seem to find out how to fill in all of the fields, despite using the V355-5 guide to filling it out. Does anyone who has successfully registered a Sabre/Scimitar/Scorpion have a copy of one completed? I'm really struggling with the weights, tax class, (I am assuming 'Crawler' from what I've read?), wheelplan etc (or do I just use what I find out the web?) basically the whole form!!!!

To prepare, I have the Sabre fully insured on its military number and I also have all of the age report etc from IMPS on their letter headed paper which includes service history etc.
My other question is around tax and MOT. The guidance states that I need to include the latest MOT and also payment for tax, but as the manufacture date is 1971, it appears that the Sabre is both tax and MOT exempt. Reading on though, it seems as though you have to apply for those statuses once the vehicle is registered, so how does that work?

It was purchased from Military Vehicle Solutions fully restored earlier this year although I don't have any paperwork for that.

Any help to fill this in would be massively appreciated as I'm feeling a little lost with it all...

    Cheers,

    Alex

  5. Just to close this one out and thank everyone for their help, it was a loose connection on the main plug that was preventing her starting and ticking over. So my first foray into the world of engine deck off, I fixed that and also changed the coil while I was there to see if that improved her running. It did! She is now running sweetly and happily around the field waiting for the DVLA to go back to work so that I can start the process of road registration!

Hope you're all keeping well and thanks again for the help!

Hiya, thanks very much for the tip! As an (extremely!) new cvrt owner, could you give me some guidance on where physically it is in the engine bay?

  7. Afternoon all,

Soooo. My first problem to be solved and I'm definitely in need of some guidance from you all!

I was driving the Sabre around a field having recently put about 40 litres of fuel in. She conked out at low speed and then wouldn't restart but the issue is curious and I don't know what to look at, so here's the description of what's happening:

She cranks over on the starter fine and then on gentle application of the throttle, she catches and revs. As soon as I let go of the starter button, she cuts out. Hold the starter in for 2 secs and she revs normally off the throttle. Obviously, I have only tried that once as I don't want to burn it out but given that she turns over and catches and the throttle seems to be working, I'm not sure what to look at. Can anyone help please?

Hi Alex wow, Looks as good as a base refit, that white lower hull looks so nice sad it lasts as long as the first muddy boots scraping its sole over the back of the gear pedal🤦🏻‍♂️, did you have to sauce new handbrake belts or are they original, did it come with the nbc system under the rear lower bin *cough*armour door.

Such a nice build Alex I’m excited for you to get her on the road, word of warning you need to do halt parades on these girls if you drop oil from a road wheel hub it’s a rebuild at worst best a top up, but I cannot stress final drive levels it has to be like a religion you seize a final drive hub best case you need a wrecker recovery worst case you spin doing 60mph or arch in the direction of the now still track, you will most likely be ok ish anything you in well.... yer you stop you check put back of hand on your hubs, I doubt you will do much long road runs but you get the point, you need comms and ear protection you probably know but so does anyone you take out.., 10 years of useless information has a use again 🎉

Thanks v much, I am trying to learn as much as I can to stay safe and keep her running! So all of the checks and stuff that I need to do come as welcome advice!! So I need to  check the wheel hubs regularly for oil leaks. Will get  my manual this weekend and make sure I add it to my checklist, thanks v much. Any other advice most welcome.

I can't take any credit for the rebuild, MVS did it and I only bought it from them 🙂

I bought some headsets and have a helmet to stop me banging my head on the mantlet!

  9. Thanks for the wonderful welcome everyone! I’ve been practicing driving around a field until the V5 arrives and am very slowly learning a few of her foibles!
I’ve ordered a few manuals so will spend some quality time going over those over Easter.

The engine is running beautifully which is nice! I’ll be looking to see what I can get working in the turret next so will beer looking for some help on the sights and how to clean/refurb them.

I’ll also be looking to get some of the CES in the near future too so any uses on where the best spares etc are to be found would be awesome.

Here are some pics of the restoration. Will update with ref number and a bit of history as soon as I have it. Hope you’re all keeping well!

  10. Morning all,

My name is Alex and I live in north Essex, not too far from Saffron Waldon. Day job is in technology but I'd rather be skinning my knuckles fiddling with vehicles!

I joined a little while ago to get some insights (which have been brilliant!) into buying a historic military vehicle. It was always a dream to own a tank and I've had CVRTs at the top of the list for some time now. I did my H licence at the back end of last year and yesterday took delivery of my CVRT Sabre. I couldn't be more excited (if a little bit daunted by how little I know!) but I'm really looking forward to making some new friends here and learning a load of useful stuff.

    Cheers,

    Alex
