The Square was a military vehicle park ing area in the build up to D-Day and it was a stopping point on the Hamps hire one way traffic system ahead of June 1944. \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n  \n\n \n\n We are also driving through the centre of Alton at the invitation of the Town Council\, which is holding a Coronation Themed Event to welcome t he convoy. Alton is rich in military history\, not least because of the fo rmer main line London to Winchester railway that ran through the town. The trains carried troops\, ballast for airfield construction and other warti me essential goods. The railway is now a heritage line and steam locos wil l be running on the 24th June between Alton and Alresford.\n\n\n\n  \n\n\ n\n  \n\n\n\n Last\, but not least\, this year’s event is a pre-cursor to our D-Day 80th Anniversary weekend on 29th and 30th June 2024. Both these will be o n active displays during the event. The gun should be firing (blanks) at t imes during the weekend.\n\n\n\n In addition\, on the Light Railway\, we w ill be debuting the British WD Light Railway Hunslet 4-6-0T - an original 1916 War Office steam loco which (as I write this) is undergoing its first steaming trials.
