BMP1 in somerset

On my way to work last Thursday (i think), parked in a layby on the B3165 between Crewkerne and the A303 in somerset was a low loader with what i think was a BMP1. Im no expert on russian vehicles, but was wondering if anyone here can shed some light on the vehicles destination and wether we will be seeing it at local shows.

It was an OT90, going to a new owner in Somerset, I understand ( I know the haulier :whistle: )

Is the haulier a good one as regards moving MV's?? Not sure if I'll have the funds to get mine to W&P this year (if it's not sold by then) so any good, reasonably priced haulage firms would be of interest to me right now.

Hey guys, jus found this forum so joined up. I spotted this post, and it turns out the OT 90 (currently none starting, think its duff batteries) is mine. Its located in Merriott. Viewings are welcome, lol. Also, all knowledge and help welcome!

(ps - need a PKT for the co-ax mount in the turret? If so - I've got one spare & up for sale!! :) )

OK so i did already type all this then it disapeard! It started ok for the first week or so, then went flat on me, charged it and it was ok twice, then flat, charged again but no luck, charged on a bigger better charger, only one crank and a clunk like flat battery sound? Oh and to add to the joy, the area under the engine now stores most of the oil, u no, like a dry sump rally thing going on!!!!!!!!!!

 

Artistsrifles, how do u go about starting urs, any chance of a run thro? Also, do u have the engine cooling on wheen driving? But i gota b honest, its only done a few feet, off the truck, into the field and round an round a bit?

Unusual paint scheme!! :)

 

OK- starting procedures:

 

 

  1. Turn on main isolator. (top row of switches - farthest right.
  2. Turn on air flask (below and behind drivers seat to the left.
  3. Press the "Oil Prime" button and hold until engine oil pressure registers +5 Kg/cm2.
  4. Keeping the oil prime button pressed try pressing the "Electric Start" button - engine should fire within two beats.
  5. If the electric start fails and you have 50 kg/cm2 of air pressure on the gauge* then press the "Air Start" button - again with the oil prime button pressed.
  6. If both the above fail then you do have a jump-start socket at the rear of the vehicle where the door sealing wheel is. It's a two bladed type and can easily be modified at one end to fit a standard NATO starting plug - both systems are 24v. Leads are available from either Duncan or Richard, the two main importers of these vehicle.

 

* - When the engine is running the air flask should be open. BEFORE turning the engine off close the flask to store enough air in it for two attempts at air starting.

 

Engine cooling is always ON - the engine has some hot spots which, if the cooling is off, lead to warping of certain expensive components - worst case being £60,000 for a new engine assembly.

 

To empty the oil/water ( there should not be much oil - if there is then you have a leak and thus a problem that should not be ignored!!) with the engine running look down below your right knee on the bulkhead between you and the engine. You will see a valve there. Activate this valve and the system will pump what ever is in the engine bilges out of the cone-shaped fitting on the O/S of the hull. NOTE - make sure no one and nothing is anywhere near the vehicle on that side when you do this - it comes out at considerable pressure and goes a fair distance!!!

 

Good luck with her - they are a real blast to drive!!!!!!

Problem is that these are not BMP-1's mate!!

 

They are ex-Czech OT-90's and, AFAIK, not used by any one else but the Czech Armed Forces. Whilst obviously anyone can paint their vehicles in what ever scheme they like - and I agree, that Swedish scheme does look good!! - to be in keeping with he theme of the vehicle the Czech paint schemes look better. This is just my opinion though, no offence intended to any one else!!

 

Now - if I could get my hands on a Stridsvagn 103 (or S-tank to the un-initiated) that Swedish paint scheme would be my first choice!! :):):)

 

(we won't mention the commentator at the W&P show who kept calling mine a BMP-2)

Sweden purchased 338 Soviet manufactured ex-East German BMP-1s in mid-1994 (plus an additional 12 in 1996). They designated the vehicle Pbv 501 (Pansarbandvagn 501). Upgrades were carried out from 1996. With the help of Czech specialists, all Pbv 501 IFVs were upgraded as close as possible to the standards of the Swedish Army (Pbv 501A). In December 2008 it was announced that the Czech Republic had purchased all Swedish BMP-1s (PBV 501) and spares.

 

Reading http://www.janes.com/articles/Janes-Armour-and-Artillery/Pbv-501-armoured-personnel-carrier-Sweden.html it is clear one needs more than a stunning paint job to convert to Swedish Pansarbandvagn 501 standard.

 

However attractive the modern camouflage schemes may be, my favourite APC remains the Ram Kangaroo!

No argument from me as to the Ram Hanno :)

 

Visual give aways on the OT are the smaller turret from the OT64 with the 14.5mm KVPT in lieu of the BMP's 73mm low gun and the second shock absorber at the front. That makes a BIG difference when driving!!

 

I saw the Swedish sale of the BMP-1's advertised back in 2008 and contacted the selling agency to see if I could get hold of one of the training and servicing sets of documents as they were all in English. Sadly they said no, all had to go as a job lot. :cry:

Im not to bothered for the accuarcy of the OT-90 as my period is US WW2 pathfinders, jus got the OT for fun. Looked at alot of paint styles and the finish/ swedish was defo the most agressive looking and out of the norm!

 

cheers for the starting instrctions, Its pretty much wat i have been doing so far.

As for the oil, this is a problem! I need to pump it out asap so i can get my flashlight an spanners in there and sort it out? I checked the dipstick, and there is 25/ 30 left in it and the rest is jus there on the deck looking at me, wishing it was in the sump!

Like I said - it's the owners prerogative to paint his/her vehicle however they want!! :):):) Mine right now is in the standard drab green which is starting to peel and the turret has surface rust in spots so treatment is deffo needed before next year. Mind you - after the dust, mud and more dust of the show the next priority is a jet wash!! :rofl:

 

Re the bilge contents - either charge the batteries. start her up and try the pump I mentioned earlier or remove all the bolts and lift up the front deck and stick a submersible pump in that powered from an external source.

I think these are the only two options available to you for pumping her out!! :(
