Ark Royal had been concidered a lucky ship, and had survived a number of attacks, had had been erroneously claimed as sunk, by the Germans several times previously.

Famous for her part in the chase and sinking of the Bismark, she served in some of the most active naval areas, including the Norwegian campaign and escort duties to the Mediteranean convoys.

The Court of inquiry found that there were serious design faults with the Ark Royal. The ship relied heavily on a single electrical system, that had no backup, so when the main boiler room flooded there was little the damage control parties could do.

Subsequent aircraft carriers, including those then on the building slips, were modified with back up electrical systems, and improved watertight Bulkheads.
