Another Hitler double-cross as Germany invades Vichy France, which up to this time had remained free from Axis forces.

Collaberation, may be the wrong word. Petain sued for peace hoping to prevent France being razed to the ground, as had happned in 1871, and 1914/18. The Versaille treaty was so represive partly because France wanted it's own back. In 1940 there was a great panic that Germany would once again start the rape and pilliage. Best of intentions, but you can't deal with a lunatic.

I've read from numerous sources that the Versaille treaty was no more harsh then what the Germans forced upon France in 1871.

Your right Joris, international tit for tat. The US President Wilsion propsed in a speech in the US congress on January 8th 1918, 14 points which he hoped would settle the situation for all time. Britiain tended to agree but the French would have none of it.
