Now this has been told to me, but rumour is that they decided to see if it would still start recently and after a bit of checking it fired up. Been there for a fair bit as well. The only Commander I am aware of in private hands in UK is the prototype that was sold off many years ago. Does anyone know of a Commander in private Ownership, who can fill in any history, or the chain of ownership that now finds it in Pewsey? John Got a name and address, spoke briefly on a bad phone line with virtually no credit, and I am waiting to get his signed entry form back, which may be Saturday or Monday, until then my curiosity has got the better of me. (the Bulford Conmmander) Details of ownership not given on entry form, but I am presuming it is still Army owned and being taken round shows in much the same way as John Attlee's arrangment with REME Bordon.. antarmike Posted September 16, 2009 Share Posted September 16, 2009 It wasn't very inpressive, Wayne tried to pull a few light loads by got little or no traction. It needs ballast to do much, but that wouldn't be right for it. The Good news is that Wayne is chasing a correct semi-trailer (in Europe) and is negotiating for its purchase, so next time we see it it might get the drive wheels stuck to the ground by something big sat on a trailer! Bulford barracks managed to have it "broken down" in their workshops when all the others went to Jordan, then, after they had all gone, suddendly it got better and was due to be a gate guard alonside their Diamond T and Mk3 Antar. Wayne Meadows restored their Mk3 Antar and as I understand it the agreement to release the Commander to him was in recognition of all the work he had done on the Antar. Looks the part as a ballast Tractor. And got escorted onto the camp by the MOD and had them delete the photo's I had taken of it through the wire netting. Bustards. Apparently the OSA only prohibits photography if there is an intent on the photographer's part to aid or assist an enemy and taking photos without this intent is not illegal. This does however seem to be widely un-appreciated by the MOD police et al. Current "anti-terrorist" legislation (such as is used to give railway photographers an extremely hard time at the moment) also does not actually allow anyone to demand the on-the-spot deletion of photos. I have written twice to my MP Peter Tapsell, to get him to ask a question of the MOD re this matter, but he hasn't even graced me with a reply. I don't know how to take this further? recymech66 Posted January 10, 2010 Share Posted January 10, 2010 On exercise in Germany (munsterlager) there are regularly a band of merry Germans who tip up to photograph and video all the that the British Army has to offer in Armour and wheeled vehicles, they always record the vehicles coming off the rail flats then move up to various points on the range roads to take more video/photos, nobody has every batted an eyelid to my knowledge. 1 kindly German even burned a disk of everything he had from 1 particular exercise for me. Mrs Bridget Morrison, COS LF Sec Headquarters Land Forces Erskine Barracks Wilton Salisbury Wiltshire SP2 0AG Mr Michael Fincher Reference: LF Sec/18/6/61754 Date: 1st Feb 2010 Dear Mr Fincher, Thank you for your e-mail dated 10th January and the subsequent e-mails giving further details. I have been able to investigate the incident which you describe and am now in a position to reply. I should explain that the reason why this has taken some time is that there are several means by which the MOD guards its properties and each of these have different jurisdiction. I have established that it was soldiers from the Ward Barracks guard force who were involved in your case, rather than Royal Military Police or Ministry of Defence Police. You ask whether the guards in question were acting within the law. Military guards have the jurisdiction to detain suspicious persons by citizen’s arrest and handover to the Police (either military or civilian). It is clear that in this case the guards did not call either the Ministry of Defence Police or the Royal Military Police to deal with the situation – something which they should have done. You further asked whether the military police have the right to force someone to go onto camp from a public road. As with your previous question, they can do this under citizen’s arrest, but should call the police – which they did not do. The Garrison report notes that you were asked (as opposed to forced) to enter the camp and further notes that you were very cooperative throughout. Finally you asked whether they have the right to make you delete photographs. If the guards were concerned that you have taken photographs of equipment or personnel which could have been used by a person for harmful effect they should not have asked you to delete the photographs, since they may have been required as evidence. The summary of all this is that although the Guard Commander acted in good faith throughout, he should have called either the Ministry of Defence Police or the Royal Military Police to deal with the situation. He should not have asked you to delete your photographs. As a result of your e-mail and this investigation, all guard troops are being reminded of their responsibilities to both the MOD and to the public. I am also advised, however, that although your photographs were taken from the public road, they should not have been taken without permission, since although the equipment involved is no longer in service, there might be other equipment or personnel in the vicinity and your actions might (and indeed were) misunderstood. Indeed there is a notice on the perimeter fence near to the Ward Barracks entry which states ‘This is a prohibited place within the meaning of the Official Secrets Act. Unauthorised persons entering the area may be arrested and prosecuted. Photography prohibited.’ I would like to apologise to you for the inconvenience (and for any worry caused to your wife waiting outside) and to thank you for your reported cooperation and friendly manner throughout. The Garrison has stated that they would be delighted to host you in the future and provide you with the opportunity to take photographs of tank transporters with an escort to guide you.
