We had the Jersey Boys (aka cheeky b******s, or "them with the scooter powered siren") collect pallets all afternoon, and we cleared a large space to make our fire, which was to be topped by our outgoing sofa. Wood was a bit hard to come by this year, as many people had the same idea. Build pile of pallets, add sofa, a small douse of petrol, and WOOF! The flames were at least 20+ft high, and the marshalls decided to enforce the sites no bonfire policy, which they have not enforced (knowingly) in previous years. The fire brigade (and a large crowd) arrived in about 2 minutes, and after a discussion (and yes we did own up) they let the sofa burn away before dowsing the flames.
