Paul - not being funny but if this is the Eaton Twin Splitter box, you are aware of the clutch brake on this unit? Push the clutch down too far you won't get any gears!!

 

Try pressing the clutch down only just far enough to engage the gears. Once moving you can split without even using the clutch - keep power on while selecting the next split you intend to make, then when you decide to change just ease off the throttle, the drive will slacken and the split will then take place without you even realising it (just a slight clunk) until you take up drive on the throttle again.

 

If you know all this then apologies - just trying to help :cheesy:

Conversely - if I remember correctly - the original Foden (‘s own) twelve speed epicyclical gear-box, would/might also have had a clutch-stop, which DID require you to press the clutch to the floor (as I understand it), to slow/stop the clutch rotating and so assist when changing up through the gearbox.

Not conversely, RCT(V), in fact exactly the same as a twin splitter installation. However the use of a clutch brake is an acquired art (which I have yet to acquire) - but if you push too far down on the clutch and keep it there, it will try to stop the clutch plate (and hence gearbox input) shaft rotating completely and thus you can't get any gears to engage.

 

Best to forget all about the clutch brake until the box is mastered in a slow, steady fashion. Then you can use it to speed the change process up a bit if necessary.

 

The twin splitter is a lovely box to use - once on the move it should be possible to do all the splits and even the main box changes without using the clutch at all, let alone the clutch brake.

 

I had a new demo Foden 8 wheel tipper with a twin splitter for 2 days. After the first 15 minutes it was pretty obvious that there was a serious problem with either the truck or me (exactly as Paul described above :D), and a quick phone call to the dealer revealed the existence of a clutch brake - so I then knew it wasn't the truck's fault :blush:. A thoroughly enjoyable 2 days (minus 15 minutes) later I was very sad to see the truck go back :-(.

Re-reading your post, of course that isn't what you meant - think I need to catch up on some sleep this weekend :-D Please ignore my scribble above. Except for the clutch brake bit.

 

Would you expect to have a clutch brake fitted on a 8 speed range change box? Perhaps it depends on engine is used?

 

If RCT(V) is correct, and the 'clutch brake' clutch was retained from the original Foden gearbox installation, then perhaps this is causing your problems. Would be a cheap one to sort if so :-)

No I do not know this....sorry maybe it is me, its four over four, sorry am not that clear on these boxes and the terminology...I use four low then push the button and four high,..it is hard to engage every gear....

No don't be confused by my meandering post - I suppose you'd call it an '8 speed range change' which is exactly what you said, a 4 over 4.

 

Try depressing the clutch only part way and see if it changes easier. What is it like engaging a gear when stationary? I'm sure the previous owner can advise on clutch brake or not.

no he did not and as far as I know doesnt know of one, will give it a try tomorrow,

 

so basically depress the clutch only part way..until it snicks into gear, well my driver will give it a go I have to wait another 2 weeks before I can drive again...

Hi guys i an trying to find out a bit of history about my old foden GS, now beaver tail...anyone know where it came from, I know two owners but have not received much info on its history yet from them,...

 

and on another note anyone know where I can get steel body panels and parts for the old girl...should add it has been about on the scene for a while, mario had it for a while...so I am told...dont know Mario so cant ask him.

Mario is Mario Alliperti aka Blobby.

 

He is a long time MV lunatic of the Heavy Brigade.

 

He is a very pleasant gent who let me sit on the roof of that truck way back in 96 or 97 and ride around the arena at Beltring.

OKAY COULD DO WITH HIS CONTACT DETAILS SO I CAN TRY TO FIND OUT SOME HISTORY...ideal would be an army registration number...

 

Does anyone know of any Foden specialists, people who would know these trucks...plus anyone who might have a manual for the old girl...

 

Also any old photos of her playing in the past...

One thing that always gives you confidence about a truck is that it starts first time every time, this foden does just that, got a man prepped to do the gearbox and then go over all her mechanicals new silicon rubbers for the shocks and new air lines and new anything that looks like it may fail in the next few months..this truck has to be reliable...and will be treated as a commercial truck...she is getting a monster winch which looks like it will pull a house down but is only 8 tons straight line pull, with a 15 ton snatch attached she will do the job i need I am sure.,..am real pleased with my foden, she will be sweet once the speedo is working properly the interior lights are working and the headlights are upgraded, then its a collapsible bed in the cab an extra seat for third and fourth occupants plus a few other luxurys like a working heater in the cab ...

 

i CANNOT WAIT TO TRY HER OUT ON WEDNESDAY COLLECTING ANOTHER ZIL TO PLAY WITH...

Here is a couple of photos of my Foden, which i bought off Simon in the summer, it,s now working in the the forest 2 or 3 days a week, it has had a timber grab and rotator fitted and is a excelent truck for forestry and makes easy work of the 8 mile trip back to our yard fully loaded with timber. Next week i will be fitting a 13.5 ton ramsey winch to the front.

I keep thinking of buying a drawbar trailer so we can carry more timber and carry tractors and other machines to the forest, but can,t find one that would suit our needs.

What happened to passenger front window ?

 

Would suggest, WEEK'S tilt bed trailer to be most suitable, close coupled 2 axle rated to carry 10 tons, call David Crouch on 01162792245 I did see one in his Kibworth yard a couple of weeks ago.

 

Just as a point of interest, your truck also belonged to me at one time, I was the first person to own it after the MOD. I also registered it.

Hi the passenger window is still in it,s a trick of the light, even though it is used in the forest, it only gets driven on the forest roadways and fields, it certainly does not barge it,s way through the forest, we use tractors and land rovers to skid the timber to the truck, it get,s treated very well as the last thing i want to do is damage it, i know that forestry can be rough on vehicles. It fits in well with our fleet. 2 David Brown tractors and a Leyland tractor and a Land Rover 90 and an old Discovery, we find that old British stuff is perfect for working in the forest. Hi guys new to the site im a current recy mech and just got rid of my old foden recovery went to withams in good condition with all the kit 33 KE 13 if anyone knows the were abouts now, here is my replacement,

recovery job came in today 50ft dredging barge sunk into a marina while moored along side the river bank .

worked out estimated pull and put down 2/1 recovery tackle using Foden 6x6 prototype winch tractor .

job sucessfully and safely completed in about 4 hours much to the relief of the owner
