the edge burnt away, caused by some sort of tracer in the tube on the fin edge, to assist with aiming and sighting ??HF :-D

Yes. It was the pyrotechnic flare on the upper wing that dribbled down & started to burn/melt the fibre glass. That was the draw back of the wing on the Mk 1 missile.

The problem was overcome on the Mk 1A missile by the use of lights with 44w light bulbs. Fully explained in the second object in:

Thats a point - did you not say this system was wire guided and had illuminator flares in the fins to aid the weapons operator guide it onto target?????

Yes, (although they were in the vertical wings rather than the fins)

Strange. When we were firing Swingfires, everybody helped with the ammo-bashing (unpacking, loading, etc) including the squadron medic. The medic had noy long retrained from crewman and was quite happy ammo bashing (apart from place a hundredweight of Swingfire on his shoulder where it pushed the 15/19H shoulder title in his epaulette into his shoulder. OUCH!

He turned to one of the GW Troopers, trying to look knowledgeable, and asked, "So do these things have a trace so you can see it going downrange?"

At which point everybody roared with laughter because as it went downrange it left a ten foot flame behind it.
