Fordson WOT6

Recommended Posts

Forgot to take a picture before I removed it, the plate fits perfectly to the gearbox with all bolts lining up, then the plate fits to the engine with the top and sides all lining up spot on apart from the bottom 3 bolts, either way it works well and the clutch operates fine but I do need to source a new clutch plate and cover as there quite worn.

Just noticed there is a Ford WOT6 Maintenance manual on ebay, item number 333625599238. I have no connection with the seller or item, and only thought you might be interested.

Thanks for letting me know, I’ve just found it and will be patiently waiting to bid!!

Just started to strip the gearbox and it doesn’t look good, even after a good degrease it’s still mucky!

The gears and shafts are heavily pitted, I will take some pictures tomorrow to get second opinions. The main problem now is getting a rear gearbox mount, pictured below is what’s left, definitely “ fubar “ Any ideas where I can get a replacement?

I’ve found a parts supplier in the US that looks to stock virtually all the gearbox parts including the rear mount but I just need some clarification on part numbers

I know that BB means light truck but what does BBE mean? Is it BB England? The part numbers are the same on the US parts but they all start BB and my parts book are a mix of BB and  BBE

I feel that you could reuse those bits if you really had to but they won't last long and will put lots of swarf into the oil as they bed in. It all depends on budget but this was a relatively common gearbox in its day so it must be possible to find another. If you replace only the really bad gears they will be messed up by the old gears that are just fairly bad. A bit of pitting on the teeth won't do any harm but when it exceeds 10% of the contact area I think you have to regard them as scrap. Sorry !

Thanks for your input David, I am of the same opinion as you, they could be used but won’t last and it’s not worth just replacing the really bad ones, don’t think a full rebuild is in the budget at the moment, start adding up all the parts and it gets expensive.

Does anyone have a spare wot6 gearbox gathering dust in there garage?

Yes, but you have the casing. I would bet though that the difference is very minor and that all the internals will interchange directly. It would not surprise me if say Universal Carrier boxes weren't basically the same box, along with virtually every Ford V8 truck of the period. This is Ford, everything is standardized.

Are these a 4 speed gearbox? I have a 1947/48 Fordson Commercial Vehicles spare parts list for the 7V, the exploded view of the gearbox looks very similar to the one posted above, albeit without pto, has a blank plate/gasket shown though, and a different gearstick. Its whole part number is for the ET6 range as released in 1947, so another possible avenue for a replacement gearbox? I think the ET6 latterly became a home for the 4D engine so possibly where the adaptor plate came from originally?

Not entirely sure which gearbox’s fitted the 4d, I believe the Thames trader did but I don’t know any others, ideally I would like to keep the wot6 gearbox.

When working on the WOT6 some years back I found the gearbox full to brim with water. The gears were OK, but replaced all bearings. Gearbox casing was found to be cracked (possibly frozen at some point). I found another casing, I do not recall if it was marked WOT6 but it all fitted and rear plate matched up. We found that a particular CV boot can be fitted to the gear lever to stop ingress of rain water.

I’ve just compared both parts lists and there almost identical, all they have done is change the start of the parts number, ie wot6 to Et6, thanks for the info.

Did you get that manual? I saw it has ended.
