If only !!!!!!!!  then there would be more room for real military vehicles.

You're absolutely right, after all it's not like the Half-Ton was designed to fulfil a military contract, was not sold new to civilians while it was in production, was used by three services, was sold to overseas armies, was available in various specialist guises,  served in Ulster, Germany and beyond, had a 24v FFR system, was the British Army's standard 4x4 for years, could be stripped for heli-lifts, could be loaded side by side in a transport plane... No, you're right it's not a 'real military vehicle' at all. Here's one of my non-military Land Rovers - it's RAF blue as supplied so it must be civvy right?

Green canoe

Blue Land Rover

Shopping trolley with wonky wheel

Steel wheelbarrow

This does raise the very interesting question of "who is an MV show for"?  If it's just the owners, why not just find a field somewhere to meet up?  If it's for the public then surely it must take into account their interests?

This is the crux of the matter - there are owners' meetings and there are big public shows. You pays your money and takes your choice. To some extent, I suppose that choice is influenced by what individuals want from their vehicles. Personally I prefer the low key events and owners' club events and just driving my old junk but, equally validly, others like attending shows and having an exhibit there. I guess, if you're going to a commercial event, you're going to their party so have to abide by their rules. Whether such rules lead to the continuation or growth of a show is another matter altogether.

I'm sorry to say I have witnessed some MV owners fly off the handle when someone has politely questioned some aspect of their vehicle & the questioner is dismissed as  their opinion or observation is not valid because they don't own a MV themselves, although owning one is no guarantee you will be listened to either!

Could it be that the person asking or making a polite statement, was commenting on why the MV in question, was flying more flags than Coronation Day, or had loads of personal kit hanging off the sides and wing mirrors, which the enquirer didn't remember seeing when serving in the Army in NW Europe?

Yes very much that sort thing. A double aggression can be triggered if the vehicle in question has a collecting box for a Service charity, because to question anything about the vehicle is seen as not just an affront to the owner but is taken as criticism of the act of collecting for charity. I should say that there are some very nice people with very nice sensible vehicles who do an excellent job fund raising.

I imagine most of us in our own ways give to charities without making a fuss about it & would have no reason to criticise anyone fund raising but that should really not be a smoke screen to create an immunity from questions or comments even when they are politely presented.

Some years ago I was looking with astonishment at Mk2 Pig at W&P that had a number of quite strange embellishments & markings that made it look somewhat ridiculous. I was confronted by an ex-NI veteran who assumed the vehicle was mine & was clearly upset who started to admonish me for the way it was presented as being totally unrealistic & he felt that it dishonoured him & his colleagues.

By chance I happened to see this Pig in a museum a couple of months ago. It still had all the nonsense but it had a number of other issues relating to servicing. Polite mentioning of these issues was met with indifference, undaunted I followed up with an email offering to help with a Servicing Schedule & any copies of documents or photos to help with presenting & running the vehicle.

I did get a response but only after I had posted some observations on TripAdvisor. I got a very aggressive response wanting to visit me & see what vehicles I had & how well restored they were also wanting to know what I had published about MVs. Yes & of course they use it in connection with collecting for Service charities & a very worthy thing to do, which I am not criticising. So that was the trump card, I had no right to say anything presumably?

I am sure W&P would never have become the largest mv show in the world if it had excluded the humble landrover  (or Jeep and gmc which are always plentiful). It was always about scale for me, prior to mv ownership I could not believe how many people could afford to own, store and maintain MV’s and be willing to travel the distance (especiallyfrom Europe) to attend a show in Kent.

As a collector only back then, trailing around the mundane to find the hidden nuggets was what drew to the far flung corners of the show ground, most mops give up just beyond the reenactors. Admittedly the quality (rarity) and variety of MV’s attending has reduced over years but is this solely down to the new owners .?

I fear that you are correct, most of the usual suspects have cancelled. Its very disappointing. Not as disappointing as being dead would be but still.....

On the plus side, it's potentially a summer of restoration so we can hit the shows next year en masses!

Yes was receiving positive face book messages from them up until about a week ago, but suspect it’s cancelled. Secretly I am pleased as this year I have had to book the family holiday at the start of the summer holidays (if that even goes ahead), so would have missed it, first for 15+ years......

With all the shows cancelled, not sure were I’m going to get my ‘fix’ this year, mind you my wallet will be fuller with no militaria purchasing opportunities !!

Yes, eBay has been being viewed copiously in between ‘working from home’, however its far too sterile, its the smell and diving in piles of kit to find the elusive treasure that I miss.....Plus the opportunity to either suffer from heat stroke or drown in the mud at the Hop Farm !!

Plus the prices on eBay! Mind you when I can can justify stopping working, it may be a good opportunity to sort out the boxes of kits I don’t need and post it up on ebay.

I have seen suggestions in some face book groups about having online shows with people posting pictures and info about their vehicles to enable visitors to virtually wander around a show.

I remember it well! In fact, that's my M75 in the background so I think this was 1992.

Hi Adrian, thought you might recognise your APC  in the background. Thanks for the date I knew it was early ninety something now I can date the rest of the photos in that series

I remember that, a stunt by RR Services as I recall, the crowd were horrified at the loss of a jeep😁

Would this virtual show be truly authentic & display pictures of overflowing toilets?

Yes we had been told what was about to happen - I'm told the Jeep was a Hotchkiss with a quick paint job a few extras and plenty of rote in-it I think a Ford Escort lump under the hood - appeared to drive ok and looked the part - but the stunned silence was amazing - wish I'd taken more photos of those around the arena -
