This is the crux of the matter - there are owners' meetings and there are big public shows. You pays your money and takes your choice. To some extent, I suppose that choice is influenced by what individuals want from their vehicles. Personally I prefer the low key events and owners' club events and just driving my old junk but, equally validly, others like attending shows and having an exhibit there. I guess, if you're going to a commercial event, you're going to their party so have to abide by their rules. A double aggression can be triggered if the vehicle in question has a collecting box for a Service charity, because to question anything about the vehicle is seen as not just an affront to the owner but is taken as criticism of the act of collecting for charity. I should say that there are some very nice people with very nice sensible vehicles who do an excellent job fund raising. I imagine most of us in our own ways give to charities without making a fuss about it & would have no reason to criticise anyone fund raising but that should really not be a smoke screen to create an immunity from questions or comments even when they are politely presented. Some years ago I was looking with astonishment at Mk2 Pig at W&P that had a number of quite strange embellishments & markings that made it look somewhat ridiculous. I was confronted by an ex-NI veteran who assumed the vehicle was mine & was clearly upset who started to admonish me for the way it was presented as being totally unrealistic & he felt that it dishonoured him & his colleagues. By chance I happened to see this Pig in a museum a couple of months ago. It still had all the nonsense but it had a number of other issues relating to servicing. Polite mentioning of these issues was met with indifference, undaunted I followed up with an email offering to help with a Servicing Schedule & any copies of documents or photos to help with presenting & running the vehicle. I did get a response but only after I had posted some observations on TripAdvisor. I got a very aggressive response wanting to visit me & see what vehicles I had & how well restored they were also wanting to know what I had published about MVs. Yes & of course they use it in connection with collecting for Service charities & a very worthy thing to do, which I am not criticising. Alan Posted November 17, 2019 Author Share Posted November 17, 2019 I am sure W&P would never have become the largest mv show in the world if it had excluded the humble landrover (or Jeep and gmc which are always plentiful). It was always about scale for me, prior to mv ownership I could not believe how many people could afford to own, store and maintain MV’s and be willing to travel the distance (especiallyfrom Europe) to attend a show in Kent. As a collector only back then, trailing around the mundane to find the hidden nuggets was what drew to the far flung corners of the show ground, most mops give up just beyond the reenactors. Secretly I am pleased as this year I have had to book the family holiday at the start of the summer holidays (if that even goes ahead), so would have missed it, first for 15+ years...... With all the shows cancelled, not sure were I’m going to get my ‘fix’ this year, mind you my wallet will be fuller with no militaria purchasing opportunities !! Plus the prices on eBay! Mind you when I can can justify stopping working, it may be a good opportunity to sort out the boxes of kits I don’t need and post it up on ebay. I have seen suggestions in some face book groups about having online shows with people posting pictures and info about their vehicles to enable visitors to virtually wander around a show.
