You usually pay the vat before they will release the vehicle from the port . On ww2 vehicles you can pay the lower rate of 5%

That's right, thanks. I've paid VAT prior to release at port and have the receipt, but I'm trying to comply with the specific requirement to notify HMRC of the import of the vehicle.

Or have I already somehow done that?

So - does my receipt for VAT payment form the only HMRC evidence DVLA require for registration?

I don't want to start paying penalties for not notifying HMRC within the 14 day deadline.

It would be helpful if the website made this clear - it seems to suggest that wherever the vehicle comes from a notification via NOVA is required.

I see a phone call to HMRC looming on Monday.

' VAT Information sheet 06/13 : notification of vehicle arrivals ' , there's a section on permanent imports by individuals and non VAT registered businesses and which you'll find on the Governments website

There can be exemptions. When I brought Katy in from Jersey, non EU and subject to VAT, I was charged nothing. As she was an inhertiance, and I'd technically owned for one year (Probate in Jersey is a year and a day) Customs decleared her my private property, no VAT liability, have a safe journey.
