Recovery service and support

Messaging on the forum should have the same rules of life as sending an email , if you receive something that winds you up your sure bet on an instant reply fired from the hip, then later when reread may regret your reaction !!

 

Give old paulob1 a break , perhaps he needs applauding for offering a service to enthusiasts , who never know when they might be on his doorstep and in need of assistance :thanx:

For information only Apart from Autohome there are manyclubs offering breakdown and recovery services for larger vehicles. Some aresubscription and some are pay for use. As far as I am aware none of thesecompanies have any vehicles of their own. All rely on a data base of recoveryvehicle operators who they call out. These recovery operators have inter traderates that they will work for. Any of these operators will if contacted bewilling to quote at set rates for any job anywhere in the country. What I was suggestingis rather than setting up a new club service merely get your name on the database offering the unique services you can provide. Also means at a stroke youcan provide recovery at competitive rates anywhere not just locally. As anexample today we have had two jobs one was airlines in greater London the otherwas a sat nav job in county Durham we took both on and sorted within 1.5 hrs atcompetitive rates everyone happy

This system worked well when we used Crouch's network at Alltruck, Leicester with breakdowns up & down the UK and Europe. I rarely had to challenge an invoice from them either. With my current employer, we're tied into FMG.

I dealt with Paul quite some time ago to get a ferret transported and can vouch he is a top guy that is passionate about MVs. I think the rate he charged me was extreme value for money, probably because it gave him a chance to play...although I may be wrong there :)

 

paul...are you suggesting the recover service is run by MV enthusiasts, for MV enthusiasts? That may be your USP in that case?

the biggest problem with the club insurance type people is when you need them most you are dealing with call handlers who have set questions to ask when dealing with your call no knowledge whats so ever of your situation or the vehicle they are being asked to deal with. My advise if you want to go it alone is to ring up a recovery operator who has knowledge of military vehicles and ask what its liable to cost to go home get pulled of motorway etc and set up a cash account. Bear in mind it don't have to be in their area they have the contacts. then in your moment of dire need give them a ring. One such type has been mentioned many others are available stay clear of those that waffle on. Little tip take note and see which private operators are actually towing currently serving Mod vehicles about or doing recoveries for the Mod very few are done by the Mod anymore

Very true when I rang for recovery of my Shorland this year I was put through to a call centre probably not in this country. As I didn't want the recovery man to not recognise my vehicle, I explained that my Land Rover from the rear did not look as other Land Rovers do as it has a turret.

 

"You are towing a caravan?"

"No I am not"

"But it has a turret"

"What is turret?"

"A small turret, bit like a thing on top of a tank"

"You are in a tank towing a caravan?"

"NO!"

Okay all interesting stuff. Adds to my point, if you called me up and said you had a Jackall to recover I would at least know what you were talking about or an M1A1 Abrams, or a FV623, or a bren gun carrier etc etc...

 

But back to my thread.

 

We are having the flat bed MOT'd today so she will be properly added to our list of recovery tools. Still looking for a good heavy lift truck but we do not yet as such have the business for it. So we may go a few other routes before we go heavy lift...

Keeping my thread on track. Hoping the interfering busy bodies eventually get the hint and go away.

 

I am building a nice list of those interested. I suppose at some stage I would have to make this a formal business but for now i am just doing it as a bit of a helping hand, that specialist service for those guys who run these old trucks and vehicles that don't want to be stuck for hours on the side of the road.

best of luck in you current project hope your 35 year old foden borrowed 20 ton low loader and 7.5 ton spec lift live up to your expectations my word I will comment no more but if you happen to get stuck there are people you can ring for advise and I don't mean my self. but people with 50 or more years experience

Hi brooky I have documented our recovery gear above. Yes we do recovery but generally at the moment we just recover up to 7.5 tons. Only because we have steered clear of the bigger stuff for now.

 

But as I said in my original post I am gauging interest.

 

I would go where ever the break down is if I did it but rightly as you say if you are up in Edinburgh and needed recovering to Edinburgh sending a truck from Guildford would be suicide and take forever. With the right numbers I would then talk with like minded HMVF users to get them on board so that they too join the club and take a share of it...

 

this is why I was suggesting a club of like minded users...

 

so far interest in it would not warrant an all England service, but we have to start somewhere and I have started.

 

My investment in the hardware is going to proceed at a pace but we have to also turn ourselves from maintenance company to a full on recovery company, or likely continue to do a mix of both. Low loader mot'd but tractor failed on front brakes being unbalanced.
