He appears to have flash burns to his elbows and his shirt's suffered the same way. Jerry

A very good interpretation Jerry. But it's not actually that, he hasn't been burnt, his shirt has just got hitched up.

The second photo looks like some kind of protective clothing and he looks to be wearing rubber gloves, headgear looks odd, is it anti-gas or similar?

Richard yes well observed & deduced. There is a common thread between the two pictures.

1,000 miles away from Christmas Island ..... could this be Malaya? Anti-mosquito clothing maybe. The second photo shows a dark band across his back is this a shadow or a camo pattern? Final observation, first photo, where shirt sleeves are rolled up the material looks lighter on the inside, must be made of something special. Some kind of tropical wear.

No somewhere a bit bigger Richard :D:D

Anti-mosquito clothing maybe.
Nope you were on the right track before, it is a BC Smock.

It does & there is a reason

must be made of something special.
Nope it is the same material.

Some kind of tropical wear.
Only in the broadest sense it is nothing particularly special

Looks like the first bloke has prickly heat rash on his forearms and sweat soaked shirt, the dark patch on the second ones back looks like sweat soaking through the outer garment.

Yes well done Bernard it is indeed to do with the problem of vast amounts of sweat soaking his clothing.

The next stage is to determine why he has become sweaty & why this British trial was being carried out in Australia?
