MW exhaust manifold repair

44GPW

Question

Found a crack whilst replacing a suspected blown gasket on my exhaust manifold this morning. A replacement will be very hard to find I think so repair is my only option. Has anyone had any success with repair compounds such as 'Inferno' or is this just a quick temporary fix?

Thanks

Richard

Richard,

I suspect that this would be a quick and very temporary fix. Manifolds do turn up occasionally ( I dropped lucky with Norman Aish last year) otherwise look for a specialist cast iron welder - there are two or three in the Midlands. I still need to get the manifold for my OX welded, it is currently running civvy manifolds.

There's a guy up the road from me, old school engineer who welded a manifold for me which was pretty much scrap. If you need his number let me know and I will PM it to you. He's based near Sleaford Lincs, but you could always post or courier it to him.

Thanks for the responses lads.

Bawtrylwt , yes I believe it is. There's an exploded diagram on a previous 'Wanted' post of mine. Could you possibly send me a photo? Jack1940@sky.con.

Argot1751, thanks for that, gives me another option. If you could let me have the contact details that would be great.

Mike, yes i will give the main dealers a call if I have no luck with the above.

Thanks again

Richard

There are slight differences with the QL manifold, but it will fit the MW with no problems. The QL has a bracket at the front for a stay bar to the radiator, and a bracket at the rear for the throttle return spring, also no vacuum take off for the wipers.

Yep....definitely cracked

I have just taken a Chev 216 manifold (identical to the Bedford 28hp) in to the welders today for an identical crack to be welded. It had been done in the distant past but had cracked again alongside the weld, looks like the manifold was not preheated or cooled too quick after welding. The guy was very confident on doing it successfully.

I know that Mercedes-Benz dealers have a factory supplied "special tool" which will take cyl heads. They refer to it as the "10,000 dollar pizza oven" and use it to cook their daily cookie batches. This will certainly take an MW manifold.

It could be that as the manifolds are slowly corroding away that they are no longer strong enough to contain the stresses?

Trevor,

The problem is heat distortion, they get a bow in them and when the manifold is removed to change a gasket, if not checked, on refitting the manifold the cracks can occur on tightening. Another thing is that the two manifolds have to be aligned and if not done correctly this will induce cracks.

Hi Richard, so were they known to crack even when new? I assume from what you say that the inlet and exhaust are on the same side, so what would be the right and wrong way to mount them? The closest I ever got to working on a Bedford was servicing a TK coal lorry (Corrals?) many years ago...
