Good News at The DVLA.

Recommended Posts

I have contacted DVLA 3 times thus far within the last month to discuss the registration information of my Series 3 Landrover. Currently it has a "Y" registration which ties in with the year it was cast. I have a certificate from Gaydon stating the build date of 1974 but the DVLA database states it was built in 1975. I want to get the database amended to reflect the real build date (esp. with the possibility of free road tax next year on the 40 year rolling scheme) and an age related plate.

All the staff at DVLA want to tell me is how to claim exemption from road tax - I keep telling them I do not need this for at least a year, that their database is wrong and I would like an age related plate if possible but I might as well talk to a brick wall. Totally useless!! :embarrassed:

This is the type of situation where the DVLA get bad press, however the question is who is at fault?

The process is really simple and if you dont follow that process problems occur

The first thing you need to do is to run a vehicle check using the link in an earlier post and check date of manufacture

If the date of manufacture is 1974 then happy days it will be exempt next year (if the date is rolling)

If it is not then you need to get the date of manufacture recorded on the database

To do this you will need a letter of verification from a club recognised by the DVLA (unfortunately a certificate from Gaydon is not recognised by the DVLA, again not the DVLA's fault but Gaydon are not on the approved list)

Once you have this you send a covering letter requesting the date of manufacture is amended, the verification cert from an approved club and I think your V5

They will then amend the details

You can if you so desire request an age related plate, this however will not have any impact on whether the vehicle becomes eligable for Historic status as this is derived from the date of manufacture and not registration

I actually think the registration number issued at the time of first registration is part of the vehicles history, that however is your choice

As I say an easy process...............so dont knock the DVLA for not giving you the answers you need, follow the process and it will work

Bit worried the way this thread is going on our friendly forum? Anyway, my experience probably wont help:blush: I sent off my paperwork about two weeks ago to register the M38, had a phone call last Thursday from a really nice guy from DVLA to say I had put my taxation start date as 1 May (i wasnt that optimistic:D) but they couldnt issue a tax over 14 days before so could it be started on 1 april!. Duly agreed the new V5 arrived this morning!. I imagine the tax disc will arrive next week.

So thanks to Chris Brooks, MVT verification officer, Robert who inspected the vehicle on his behalf, and the relevant staff at DVLA - there I've said it!:D

I promised earlier in the thread to drop a note to the contact I have in the DVLA about the person with responsibility for military vehicles

I had an email back this morning to the effect that they were not aware of anybody with that responsibility, but were going to check and get back to me

The plot thickens.................................

Good news about the M38 (pleased to have helped) ....................the system does work!!!

Many thanks - This is the information I was after!! First question then is why didn't DVLA tell me this rather than just keep on telling me how to change taxation class??

Second question - how do I get a certificate from the MVT verifying it's build date - paid up member so do I just have to send a copy of the Gaydon certificate to the appropriate MVT officer or what???

As promised I have been in touch with the DVLA and have had a definitive answer from them this morning

The general gist is that the same team are dealing with all historic vehicles (ex military included), so no changes there

However there is a specialist team that deals with the registration of current MOD vehicles

Maybe thats where the confusion came from????????

Don't get it??

The good news is the DVLA have appointed someone who actually knows about military vehicles to manage the licensing of newly registered ex military vehicles, just after lunch I met him today and it was clear he knows what he is talking about.

Why make a statement that an official in a Government Department has been appointed to deal with certain vehicles & then refuse to name him? what's the big secret? Maybe we should just make an FOI request to get his name
