Browning .30 Cal and GPMG turret mounts.

Recommended Posts

Hi I thought I would start a topic for these as doesn't seem to be much info on how to ID them E.G. modified mounts etc, although there are a few topics on here I thought a dedicated point of reference rather than multiple topics my help.

This is for the Mounts and weapons that were fitted to Pig, Shorland, Saracen and Ferret turrets.

So if anyone else has pics of these mount feel free to post them here so as to increase amount of reference pics. And if anyone can ID any of the mounts then please do so as to increase the chances of others identifying there mounts.

I have found some pics on the web of varrious mounts whilst searching for info on my mount so thought I would post them here to help others ID there mounts or prospective mounts etc. (CREDIT GOES TO ORIGINAL POSTERS OF PICS)

Vehicle No5 Mk3 mount for Browning 30 cal machine gun:

These were for the turretless ferrets, they were designed so that you could use them whilst taking cover in the hull, the first exaple is for sale as per link below the pics.

It turns out that there is a coller that goes over the .30 Cal barrel (the part which is outside the turret) which I assume was to stop incoming rounds from squezing past the gap between the barrel and the gun mount mantlet. I have found a few pics of it, (I did find a better pic but will have to find it again):

I also inquired about the replicas Cross Fire produce, http://www.xfireuk.com/ heres there response:

The GPMG butt is removeable, on both versions that we make (infantry and sustained fire). The sustained fire version has a forward flash arrester which is what you would find on either a turrett or internally mounted GPMG, these normally come without the top sights or carry handle. At the moment we are making a fresh batch for stock to so it would be quite easy for us to make a bespoke version at no extra cost. Our new bibod which is not on any of the milweb pictures is removable and only available as an extra accessory any way. We are mainly an engineering company and in the last 8 months we have been unusually busy with our other work which is why the website has been allowed to slip into darkness and we have not been actively out there, but as I already said we making new stock right now and are about to relaunch ourselves, I will have some GPMG's made in 1 - 2 weeks and can send you up to date pictures then if you would like at that point.

Just in case anyone is looking for a GPMG or the Browning .30 cal for there vehicle, http://military-muckabouts.webs.com the butts are removable on these also.

Also there is http://www.relics.org.uk who do both the GPMG and Browning .30 cal.

And there is a Browning .30 cal for 800 p+p here: http://ekmpowershop5.com/ekmps/shops/greenmachines/daimler-ferretmk23-browning30-cal-mount-1919-p.asp

I have no affiliation with any of the sites I have listed, just thought the link would be usefull.

Hi got some more details on Xfire's replica GPMG.

My question:

Is this the type of flash suppressor you produce at the moment?

ferret_flash.jpg

Xfire's response:

Yes we have made this type of flash guard on our sustained fire version, i will be able to send you a picture towards the end of next week.

Once I recive pics I will post here for others.

Yes I made that one out of plastic. (Also made the missile bins they were ally though!)

The discs were fitted to all Vigilant Shorlands. But not to normal RUC Shorlands. However I have seen newsreel footage showing one on a RUC Shorland!

The answer is that the Shorland shown below the picture of my turret at the Paris Air Show WAS a RUC vehicle 1960 TZ. It was a mock up as the Vigilant Shorland demonstrator was already committed elsewhere and was loaned by the RUC.

There may have been a second Browning with disc, because AOI 4055 was originally built as a Vigilant model but was diverted from contract to be issued to the RUC in 16/10/69 subsequent to the rioting in August.

May be worth commenting that into the 1980s 15th/19th The King's Royal Hussars' (3 Armd Div Recce Regt in BAOR) rebroadcast and sergeant-majors' rover Ferrets (Mark 1s) were all still using canvas-belted ammunition in the Three-Ohs as opposed to disintegrating link as shown here.

Likewise the Mark 2s we had in UNFICYP in 76-77.

This is a great bit of research. Thanks

Don't suppose any one has any parts for this gun mount. namely the top half of number 5 (the turn buckle) and number 12. (the hand wheel).

I've been digging and have found my GPMG mount. Looking at the pictures I might be better buying some batteries for my camera as rushing them only made them look like a dogs dinner.

Some of these links appear dead. Does anyone have info or pix on what mount and machine gun would be used in the turret of a Saracen? I believe the one I bough is a MK6 version, I thought it takes a 30 cal. Browning, but I have been told by someone working on it that it is a GPMG. I would like to purchase a dummy gun, want to make sure I don't get the wrong piece. What makes it more difficult is I haven't actually seen the Saracen with my own eyes, and I'm an ocean away from its current whereabouts, so logistics of "making sure" are not easy.

Being a Mk 6, I can almost guarantee that it is fitted for an L37 GPMG. The easiest way to tell us to look at the shape of the hole for the barrel. If it's round, it's for a Browning; if oval shaped, it's for the GPMG (to allow for the gas tube as well as the barrel).

Cheers,

Terry
