HMS Ark Royal. £3million of scrap!

Ark Royal is still there looking resplendent before her one way ticket to Turkey. There are two frigates being sorted for the same fate. Not sure if they will travel together when they go?

As it is the school holidays I took my sons to the dockyard today to see stuff before it all goes to scrap.

If they just sank Ark Royal in the solent then some future prince could get involved in her raising in future years and she could be 'saved' for the nation.

An idea as they'd make a huge loss in selling it anyway would be have it as a national falklands war museum perhaps what does anyone else think?

Sam

HMS Invincible was the candidate in my opinion for a carrier to be saved for a museum.

There is no one high up enough in government who has any interest in the nations military heritage.

When you consider government wastages and all other misappropriation of monies.... what an absolutely shocking and disgusting state of affairs.

In addition surely some people in this country with money coming out of their ears would make something of it.

Previous to this of course was the most famous carrier of them all which had no friends in high places.... HMS Ark Royal R09.

Can you imagine seeing her today at Portsmouth next to HMS Warrior with Phantoms and Buccaneers on deck?

I will just edit this post here to add a photo of R09

Imagine as above....

Here is a link to a photo ( on Flickr ) which shows HMS Invincible in 1980 when she was brand new.

Whats that ship behind her.... HMS Ark Royal R09 awaiting her fate.

H.M.S. Invincible

So thats two vessels that we have lost and now yet again another is going the same way.

Perhaps we will have to get HMS Hermes back.... but where is the money going to come from?

Once a ship is scrapped we all know you cant bring them back.

There is one Royal Navy carrier of course with a great deal of historical interest that is still around.... current location http://maps.google.com/maps?q=36.05,-4.75&ll=35.986896,-4.471436&spn=1.240088,1.766052&t=h&z=9

To be honest I still have trouble regarding the "through-deck cruisers" as carriers. If I had the magic wand of preservation I would have saved a "proper" carrier.

Here is a photo of a ' proper carrier ' ... HMS Ark Royal R09 at Portsmouth.

Imagine if she was still there to go and visit.

Ah well, all we have now is that great series SAILOR.

agree with all above.......

....HMS Ark Royal (proper!) was an awesome old ship....why she wasn't preserved is a matter that only those in the highest portals of office could answer .......and they never will....

Am I right in saying that is the US Nimitz moored alongside of her in the photo link?....

....I guess we ( or certainly I :D ) always thought Ark Royal was 'big'?...she's rather dwarfed next to Nimitz though !

PS: Edit ! I really ought to read the full info on the photo before posting .:red:...yep it is the mighty Nimitz

Double PS: and hey Wattie!.....I posted a review of that book you mentioned quite a while back .I thought it was an incredibly eye opening and also disturbing book.....but the MODS didn't agree or not at least publicly ... :)

Ref a BBC report from Sept 2012 about HMS Illustrious.

I cannot understand why HMS Illustrious is being earmarked for preservation!!!

Pity HMS Invincible was not selected for the helicopter operations upgrade instead of Illustrious as it has so much historical interest in comparison.

You just answered your own question - without invoking the dreaded "P" words there is no will or interest in preserving the historical any more - in those circles that rule nowadays it is seen as an embarassment and a hindrance to future apologizing to those who's butts we kicked. :(

There's no "P" involvement, it's simply a matter of money, no more, no less. The MOD is flat broke and cannot afford to support what it's already got, never mind running museums. In these recession-ridden times there's precious little private money around either. Most people fail to realise that obtaining ships, aircraft or tanks is the easy part, paying for the continued upkeep is the difficult bit. How many museums have you been round recently that look as they could do with a substantial cash injection? Most millennium-funded ones I've seen are looking decidedly shabby these days.

A really great & unique photo here of HMS Ark Royal R07 i think...

Three Centuries of British Sea Power

HMS Victory (Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar; HMS Warrior (Britain's first iron-hulled battleship); and HMS Ark Royal and HMS Illustious (twentieth century aircraft carriers), in harbour at Portsmouth.
