garys39 Posted April 28, 2012 Share Posted April 28, 2012 I have been sorting through some uniforms and equipment I bought last year, and the jacket below was amongst the items, it has a paper price label with the following on it "Falklands F/W Reversable Grn White Smock, as I intend to do a few local fetes, where I have exhibited some of my Militaria collection in the past, and with this year being Falklands 30th anniversary, I wondered if this would be appropiate and accurate to display ?, is there any photographic proof these were used during the conflict or would it have been produced for use post conflict. It is named inside the hood "Stone" and in both sleeves "778 PB-S", there appears to have been a label by the zip (see close up photo), but nothing else. Some of the white finish is flaking off. I bought it off a person who said that it was a special forces jacket, looking at it i was not sure that it was because it didnt look very military. I paid a stupidly low price for it and though it would be handy for something, i used it last year on my pup tent as it is only the half closed type. wdbikemad Posted April 29, 2012 Share Posted April 29, 2012 Army-issue item.....the green/white reversible dates from the mid 70s and was introduced as part of the new-issue arctic clothing alongside the DPM arctic windproof suit, hat, etc.......it basically saved on having to carry two waterproofs in arctic climates and could be worn green or white depending on the presence of snow or not....... Many paras and marines had these available for the Falklands, alongside the windproofs............they were still listed as an issue item during 86 according to my QM CG (combat clothing) catalogue........ Much proofed nylon clothing from this period, reinforced with tapes and rubberising for waterproofing, suffers from deterioration due to age........I have a very nice, rare 1st pattern OG nylon "crisp packet" NI nylon waterproof in almost mint condition on the outside but the interior is poor.......same story with a scarce RN issue MK 3 waterproof jacket in green rather than blue....... Oddly, the items appear in the "CG" list even though the labelled example further down this thread has a NSN (correctly) prefixed by the "CM" (specialist applications) designation......as also found on DPM arctic windproofs, etc.... Early issues (pre-82 ish) should have the old size number range.....later issues the metric sizing as shown..... Indeed, a "specialist" item as part of the arctic-issue ensemble, but not exclusively para or marine issue despite these troops, particularly marines, being common users of these garments from (usually) northern NATO deployments.... Add "Falklands" to the description and you seem to enhance your chances of a profit...........rather strange, as there was not a lot of special stuff introduced for the conflict....most of what was issued had been kicking around for at least 10 years previously.......(and after......if my own issue kit up to 85 was anything to go by.....:undecided:)...... wdbikemad Posted June 7, 2012 Share Posted June 7, 2012 Very true......these items first appeared during the late 70s......the sizing will be 1 to 3 and anything used in the Falklands will still retain the old sizing system....the modern metric sizing didn't start to appear on most MoD clothing until 83-84 at the earliest..... Sadly, even NOS garments of (now) 30-odd years old will often start to show the effects of age deterioration on components made of, or bonded by rubber.........a natural substance it will invariably deteriorate over time........often, this is very much dependent on storage........you can still find gas masks, etc, from WW2 still in damn fine condition....but others far less so....... Frustratingly, I have a NOS green MK3 RN nylon hooded smock (quire a rare item) in the collection........it looks beautiful on the outside but the rubberised waterproof coating on the hood interior is literally flaking off....... Similar to how i search but when Panzer Nut claims 10 a penny i think of for example 68 Patt which is indeed 10 a penny on Ebay but not the reversibles:cry: Also as i wouldnt mind a cheap pair of the trs i did contact Sabre and they have no Jackets or Trs in stock.
