Dusty
I wonder if anyone can offer any advice on the information inscribed on this headstone? Clearly an artillery piece appears at the top whilst further down there is No. 163872 which presumably relates to a service number. Underneath again is the word Bombardier. My question is, were there women with the rank of Bombardier in the Royal Artillery, probably in WWII going by her date of birth? There again she was born in South Africa so maybe she was with the South African forces but the same question could still be asked.
No Signals
(First posting of this appears to have disappeared so-) According to Wiki the ATS ranking system fell in line with the rest of the army from 1941. So maybe an ATS 'Corporal' would also have been known as Bombardier alongside her male counterpart if she was serving on a HAA battery? Or would that rank have only been given to those male members of the RA who did the actual firing? Dunno. Maybe someone else might have that specific info.
