Modern equivalent of OM15 oil

What is the modern equivalent of OM15 oil, or an off the shelf product like an EP80, ATM, LHM gearbox oil. This is for the Ferret fluid flywheel but cant seem to get a definite answer as to what can be used.:undecided:

 

ISO10 or ISO15 is what you should be looking to buy

The correct oil for the Ferret fluid fly wheel is OEP220 (that's what it says on the October 1984 Servicing Schedule!) and EP90 (easily available) is the same stuff.

 

No it isn't! The correct oil for the flywheel is ISO10 hydraulic fluid. Most people use Luquimatic no 1 from Morris Lubricants.

Right, thanks guys (you can tell its raining outside!), so an EP90 is what I thought, and an oil I keep on the shelf, I dont recognise the ISO oil types but am therefore assuming they correspond to an EP90 as suggested. Thanks for your input Clive, your article on oil was my first port of call!

Had a look on the Morris website and spoke to them and they only do the ISO10 in 25 litre drums, which is ok if you have a fleet of tanks (Chris) but not if you only want 5 litres? Any other suggestions?

I use Luquimatic no 1 from Morris Lubricants, and yes I had to buy a 25 litre drum. Do NOT use EP90, it is totally unsuitable.

 

How much do you think you will need Rick? I could send you over a couple of litres if you are only topping up. (I am working away so It will be next week though before I can post it)

Hi Andy,

Just a point about your fluid equivalent chart. Brake fluid in Mk1 and Mk2 Ferrets is definitely not mineral, DOT3 and 4 is a synthetic fluid. Now, the Ferret Mk4 uses OM13 as it has disc brakes.

 

OM, means Oil, Mineral and OF is Oil, Fatty (ie vegetable or synthetic)

OK, OK, I was WRONG - the correct oil for a Ferret fluid fly wheel is OM 13 / 15!! :blush:

 

However, in my defence (and I've got it in front of me as I type!), Maintenance Schedule, Scout Car, Ferret Mk1 and Mk2 (all variants), Army Code 14000 (Revised October 1984), does say (on page vi - Capacities) 'Fluid Coupling - OEP220'. It then says (on page 7) 'OM13' -the page I didn't read - presumably an MOD misprint!

 

Anyone know how to drain a fluid fly wheel...........?!

Hi Peter,

 

My post about draining was a jokey one, it would be an awful mess to be honest, the best way would be to remove the gearbox, find a pipe fitting to fit the flywheel, or a drilled out filler plug with a piece of pipe in it, that way you could slowly turn the flywheel, while the oil poured out into a can or tray. Any other way will be very messy!

It is a fluid clear in colour its not greasy fluid do you have to change it could you suck it out?

 

Park it with the front higher than the back open a hull plate beneath the sump plug and let it drain out. I think its a clear fluid I would suggest swilling out with kerosene or paraffin but I'm not sure if it will thin and wash away the fluid.

Marcus Glen has the correct oil for the fluid flywheel - The Diagram Off Andy's website and the service manual are quite clear as to what lubricants go where.

 

DOT 5 is a synthetic brake fluid - not to be used under any circumstance unless you change ALL the seals on the braking system. So use DOT4.

 

Carlube do an EP90 for the wheel gearboxes, the transverse box (normally) and the other 4 boxes. and SAE 30 byMorris lubricants is Ok for the gearbox and engine.

 

Check local motor factors for all the oils, and the correct grease, You may have to ring around a few, apart from the fluid flywheel oil which as said can be got from Marus Glen who is prompt with his service.
