My experience of the police is that they know better than that but some have become so focused upon the criminal drivers that they have forgotten what is the real issue...i am using speed as just an example because we all know the issue but there are many other ones i could sue..

When the Ford plant at Aveley (actually in South Ockendon) closed in 2004 I had to stay on for 6 months as it was impossible to relocate either the servers or the specialist kit in the Ergonomics lab. 2 weeks after the last engineers were pulled out to Dunton the plant had visitor over a weekend. CCTV had been removed and only 2 security guards were on site so they had good access. Turned out one of the trucks on site waiting to collect kit for relocation to other plants actually belonged to a gang of crooks. They spent all weekend on site stripping every single bit of stainless steel fixtures & fittings from the cafeteria kitchen and loading it on this truck. We found on the Monday the mag locks on the server room and Ergo lab had been played with but had defeated them. Ergo Lab had no windows to break into and the Server room had armoured glass (ever seen a 288 Mb multi-platter disk explode?). Some of the area printers that were awaiting collection were gone though. Show how stupid these buggers are - they had just chopped the power and network leads off - all they to do was unplug them!

Big ruckus at about 10:00 when the truck loaded with the stolen kit was driven at speed out of the exit gate almost taking out one of the day guards and a passing motorist.

Police eventually turned up and - AFAIK - just issued a crime report and that was it. £30K worth of kit taken and nothing done!!

I am not an anachist but this is a true story that makes me dispair. One of or depots which recovered vehicles on behalf of the police. Recovered a vehicle with 3/4 tons of copper cable in it for forensic enquireys. It was inspected for finger prints DNA etc. The guy who was caught driving the vehicle an Audi 80 was pulled up because it it was on its arse he was identifyed by later by cctv stealing it from a raliway compond he was arrested and charge with theft of the cable. When the vehicle was released from police custody we placed it in our compound. A day later somebody did a ramraid on the security fencing with a stolen jcb and took the car. We were alerted and informed the police and issued with a crime number we insisted and four more calls later after telling them it was being held for evidence at crown court they finally took us seriously. The next day the same driver was caught driving in the same vehicle with no cable . We got a bolloking for losing the vehicle and the case against the driver was dropped. We are currently fighting civil litigation against the driver of the vehicle for loss of £3600 of cable while in our custody

Law abinding persons allways lose out to these types situations it makes you wounder why bother because they win one way or another. If they get caught they only have a slap agross the wrist and told not to do it again! the current scrap prices drive this crime I myself think that the buyers are just as bad in accepting scrap that the know is stolen.

the same **** happens over here (Belgium) , thieves rip off brass rainpipes from the walls of houses , daily , brass leads get stolen from railway yards , causing very big trouble to the railway traffic, and every now and than , someone gets electrocuted trying to steal copper from high voltage stations when still in service , the idiots !!!!:cool2:

One of the good things you do have over there to instantly stop this sort of thing is. Your Police officers carry guns!.................:D

the scrappies are owned by Dids anyway!

Doesn't matter who owns what, "receiving" is an offence -it's often the weakness of the CPS in caring more about their conviction rate. Other than that there are loads of legislation that can be used EU waste managment legislation- waste transfer certificates, tax and HSE regs all can be used legitimately to legal close down miscreants- it's lack of willingness to do their job.

Well by the sound of it the entire country suffers the same problems. Again at my Dads factory late last year they had a weekend break in where the theives used the works flatbead to take £30k worth of scrap. My Dad has some good contacts in the area and the office had a tip off from a foundry supplier as to where the truck very much like the missing one was being held. My Dad and his business partner went down to the site and through a broken window took a photo of the truck which was indeed the stolen one and called the police. They had all sorts of grief about being on private property and taking a photo without permission etc before the Police agreed to take a look. Long story short, he got the truck back, the scrap had already gone and the Police recovered a good number of other stolen vehicles from the building. Would you believe it....no one was ever prosecuted, all the Police were interested in was who had given the company the tip off!

One, get registration of a vehicle, Two, phone 999 in hysterics claim vehicle cut you up as it was turning in and the driver waved what looked like a handgun at you. Three, Sit back and watch the fun.

I had to serve papers on a traveller camp once. The spokes ape got all indignant because the entrance to the feild had got chopped and muddy 'You'd 'fink the owner would put down some stone!' As the owner was standing behind me with the Police (Luckily, I saw a definite restraning hand) I suggested The Owner would be more than happy to bring down a Bulldozer to help them out.

A very well known demolition contractor was waitng out side a yard that traveller's had camped on. As the Twelve o'clock deadline for depature was reached he ordered all his trucks to start dumping rubble into the entrance. That was a fun afternoon!

The "do as you likeys" did our place over a year or so back, helped themselves to our red diesel (and drums!), a few jeep blocks and axles and to top it off they used our wheel barrow to move it across the field!!!!! then nicked that too! the swines!!!

biggest problem now is all the cable insulation being dumped down our road, every week a new pile!

We dont really have a problem with gypsys where we are. A couple of years ago a contingent moved in on a private lane and started causing mischief. A few days later the Police were wandering around the town asking if anybody knew why four gypsy caravans and a similar number of white vans and pick up trucks had been torched in the night. Strangely enough no one knew a thing. We have not had any come back since.

Same here what a shame!

Speaking to a maintenance guy yesterday he said that they once had a problem removing fridges / cookers and the like, they don't any more all they do is leave it out and its usually gone in 15 mins or less.

Anyone remember how the Rag and Bone men used to work? They used to announced there presence with RAG BOOONEE! We have one bunch round here who do a similar thing with a loud hailer and a transit pick up all to theme of Chas and Dave. If that doesn’t say how much scrap is worth I don’t know with today’s fuel prices.

most likely settling scores within there own "community" but police must be seen to be even handed and investigate:-).

with regard to traditional rag & bone men - I remember a motorway patrol officer spotting a rag and bone man with horse and cart plodding along a backlane so the officer recognising him as some-one he had "dealings with" before -got off the main road and "did him" for some nebulous offence with regard to animal welfare:laugh: I always wondered what the home office monthly report said with regard to that process and whether the civil servants thought they got value for money.

I had a little revenge many years ago. In the early hours of the morning I was going back to our yard to park my recovery truck, when I passed a transit pickup parked next to a fence of a steel stockholders. It’s bonnet was open and a suspicious looking man was standing next to it. He watched me travel past him and was still looking at me until I went around a bend and out of sight. I phoned the police from our yard and when I again went past (this time in my car on my way home) there was 4 police cars with all the blue lights on parked around the van. So on I went with a rather smug grin on my face. The only trouble was when I got home the phone rang and I had to go back to work, The job was to recover a transit pickup for the police. It was bloody heavy as well, loaded as it was with sheets of steel that they had been passing through a hole they had made in the fence of the stockholders.

i can remember not so many years ago when you had to pay for a scrap metal skip to be delivered to work, or having to pay to have a knackered car collected. now with the prices of around 150 tonne (est)for scrap ferrous or 1000,s for non, you can realise why theivery is so rife, surely if you are guilt free and that way inclined things could never have been so good, which is why things will only get worse untill the laws change.

my concern is also that with all these materials etc being shipped off to china to help there fantastic economic growth, what the hell are we likely to be paying for things in the future when we import it back again as something else.

prices of raw materials from the steel stock holders are now enough to make your eyes water, this has a knock on effect with customers not wanting work done where neccessary or if they do, screwing you down on costs which can only really be acheived by narrowing down on material thicknesses which obviously means less strength and quality. i think there is a much more disturbing underbelly issue to all this.

another fact is the historical loss, when its gone its gone, and all for a little unscrupuless cash in hand money.

In the last 3 months i have had stolen from the quarry a 2009 JCB Loadall a ridle bucket for a 30 ton slew and a rock breaker ( brand new ) and no amount of scrap . If a scrap yard was made to take details of the seller or even made to see a WML then it would make it harder for the scumbags to sell it .

Just in our local paper this bloke defrauded a load of companys (£220 thousand) and got sent to jail for two and a half years but was out in two months and at it again.

All i can say is be ready for the revelution ( but there are probely more of them than us straight folk ):banghead:

It really sickens me, when you hear of these losers nicking drain covers and coper from the railways etc. ultimately its our taxes picking up the tab and I dare say they are on the doll at the same time!

I was at ECO build in London this year, I spoke to a company who are using recycled plastic from bottles etc. to make bollards and drain covers, the main benefit, aside from environmental is no bugger nicks them!!

Fuel is going too, I had a call from my friend that works in forestry recently, folk had been on site, stolen the diesel bowser and punched holes in most of the machines fuel tanks! They just leave the caps on the machines unlocked now, Fuel is cheaper than the downtime a punctured tank causes!!

On my nature reserve the night faries came and emptied the diesel tank, a week later they took the generator, destroying the shed it was in in the process, 12kw lister petter so no lightweight.

For months after we had to work with a massive hired gennie, that would require a crane to nick.

Was anything recovered? was anyone arrested for the thefts? No, never heard anything about it again.

It was not the first time that we had been targeted so we spent £150,000 on having mains electricity installed. Money that was to go to rebuilding the field centre, it makes me so angry!

This might lighten the mood slightly. We had a spate of windows being smashed at night by kids with air rifles at one the plants I worked at. They caught the little s*ds on the security camera's shooting from the railway footbridge and gave it to the local plod - who promptly turned around and told the head of security they could do nothing about it - manpower, actual proof blah, blah, blah... They did send a patrol car round as the scum were known to them and got the usual "Wasn't my little <insert name> - he would never do anything like that" story from the parents.

The company put lexan sheets over the windows - so the little s*ds started on the pool cars instead.

After a week of having Autoglass on site virtually every day one of the guards took it into his head to do something about it. So he stayed on the roof one night with his own air rifle and shot every one of the little buggers in/around the gonads.

Not surprisingly the plod were around first thing the next day but the night shift on security, to a man, denied all knowledge of anyone being in the plant with a weapon of any sort. Head of security suggested it was probably more a case that the little sc*m had shot each other whilst farting about with their own weapons and the plod seemed content with that.

Never ever saw them near the site again!
