I am unlikely to make it down to War and Peace ..but I am attending the Ponderosa ww2 weekend in Heckmondwike ..which looks set to be an excellent show One of my Neigbours was an apprentice at an Engineering Company and they stripped out the Engine and also repaired the Barrel ..The m10 had been purchased for its scrap value of £1000 ....The Barrel had been cut with a blow torch and the first attempt to rejoin it proved unsuccesfull ..So the barrel was re cut and a piece of Steel rod was inserted into the barrel and the Barrel re welded ...If its the original barrel the steel rod may still exist and the barrel as such is blocked halfway ....? Adrian Scott Posted July 4, 2011 Share Posted July 4, 2011 Well guys its nearly finished , After talking with Carl on Saturday i thought i would give you a update , the last of the markings need applying and there are 7 small jobs that need finishing and ticking off the list , Adrian B has made a Transmission oil cooler guard that will be delivered to Carls this week and will need to be blasted , painted and fitted ,i hope you enjoy the photos . Adrian Scott Posted July 7, 2011 Share Posted July 7, 2011 Hi Richard , Thanks for your kind words , yes it does look fantastic ,Carl and Peter and Adrian Barrell and his team have done a wonderful job in all of there specialist areas and its as good as new now , i think it was either Carl or Adrian that told me that they thought it was at least 50 years since the M10 last moved under its own steam and yes Im looking forward also to Beltring as ive not yet driven it and i know that Adrian B has also booked a test drive in it as it was him that found it in the play ground all those years ago and rescued it !! I've read this thread through from the beginning and found all of it to be very enlightening and obviously shows how dedicated many people are in respect of preserving all historic military vehicles. Since learning last year of my late father-in-laws wartime activities as the driver of an M10 Wolverine and later of an Achilles, after the Wolverine got blown up in a minefield (an allied minefield as it happens), I've been researching all I can on the M10. My wife and I were lucky enough to get a ride around the arena at this years W&P show in Rex Cadman's Achilles after spending over an hour investigating every nook and cranny of the machine. It's great to read on this thread that another Achilles is nearing completion and I hope that it's finished soon, as from what I've read and seen on these pages, it's going to be a real credit to it's owner and the restoration team. Does anyone have any updates on progress? Well we made it to the War & Peace show this year with the M10 , straight from the work shop where it had been in the clean and dry for the last 2 or so years and delivered straight into the Beltring mud !!! , where it then stayed sheeted up for the next 2 days due to wet weather . It was its first outing since being restored and we expected a few problems to show up ,of which they did , the main problem was that it didnt like turning left ,it would turn left but only with alot of effort !! but since the tank is now back at home ,Carl has been down and is in the process of sorting it out . We had fun with it at the show ,firstly it was one of 3 sherman based Tank destroyers being towed with 3 Ward lafrances on the Fri into the arena ,and we took part in the armoured run sat eve around the show ground with our leader Jack in command on the top of the tank !!! . The last bits and pieces are in hand to be finished , Adrian B is in the process of making 2 more turret seats assemblys and Jim Clarke is making the seat cushions and a vinel sock that goes over the elevation screw thread located under the gun . Im on the look out for a breech block , turret lock and complete rear tow hook assembly . Hummer Mark has very kindly lent me the rear exhaust deflector assembly to get copied and i need to attach the leather square to the breech guard and then its just about finished , in time for A & E next year !! John Blackman Posted October 5, 2011 Share Posted October 5, 2011 I've just started work on the M10 feature today and have scheduled it for the issue of Classic Military Vehicle coming out just before Christmas (which is just around the corner in mag terms). Frankly, it is impossible in a mag feature to do justice to the amount of time, effort, sweat, blood etc that go into such things, but I'll give it a damn good try. Adrian B and Carl did a wonderful job on the restoration and Adrian S couldn't have been more helpful and enthusiastic in letting me clamber all over it. Adrian Scott Posted December 7, 2011 Share Posted December 7, 2011 Its been a while since our last update mainly because as you know its hopefully being featured in the next CMV magazine . Carl and Peter were down yesterday doing abit of tinkering with it , whilst at the War & Peace show this year a couple of things showed up that needed looking at after the show and I am very pleased to report that they have been looked at,adjusted and Carl even had to get a pair of rubber drive cuplings bespokely made , and its now really nice to drive compared to July and is going really well .It had not been started for probaly 2 and a half months and when Carl started it yesterday it started almost instantly , could you say the same about a petrol Radial ?? There have been other things going on involving Mr Barrell and Mr Clarke but will wait until the article is out before posting any pics . Adrian Scott Posted December 7, 2011 Share Posted December 7, 2011 Hi Rick , You could probaly say that i only took delivery of it officaly yesterday , its just one of them things with a major restoration , youve got to remember it was a totaly empty gutted hull when Carl started ,and as with house building there is allways a snagging list to be put right after a period of time and W & P was its first outing from the workshop . I took it for a short test drive yesterday afternoon and it is really nice to drive now .Its first outing is News years eve during the day with some of my mates and there vehicles and then bangers and mash back at the farm via the local pub !!
